Ryan | Best Way to Use Money as A Student? |
I am an 18 year old high school graduate beginning college next semester. I have accrued $3,000 and I would like to make my small amount of cash work for me. I've looked into online trading, heard about mutual funds, securities, etc. but the bottom line is I am a beginner just trying to figure investing out. I understand no plan is right for everyone and there is no magic investment, however I would appreciate any advice or help for a young beginner to get started. |

I would suggest making an appointment with a financial advisor. It wouldn't cost you anything and they would be able to explain differences between mutual funds/ stocks/ etc. and try to figure out what would work best for you. |

Lowest risk is definately getting an online account. I'll be doing that next year (junior in HS now) and I put my caddy money into the ING account. It's a good 4.5% interest rate which means you'd make $180/yr. It's guaranteed money and you should always go for the sure thing. |

Start learning about investing. Read the book "Learn to Earn" by Peter Lynch and also "One Up on Wall Street". Also "The Four Pillars of Investing" by William Bernstein is a good start. |

There is no easy answer to your question but I will tell you that 3,000 is a lot of money and the most important thing is not to lose it. With that in mind you have several options and I think the best might be to invest in a no load, low expense mutual fund that has a high morningstar ratings (4 or 5 stars). You can go to morningstar.com and do a little research. This approach will get you a professional money manager for a very small price and, because of the inherent diverisity of mutual funds will lower your risk of losing a lot of money. Of course there's no guarantee that you will make a ton, but because you will be purchasing a highly rated mutual fund (and you can select from many options), you will increase your chances of making money. Good luck. |

Dear Student,Glad to see that you raised money for futur, the best thing to do at your age is contacting ''the group investor'' probably you will find it in Usa as well here in Canada, that was my start up.Each year after you add more money to diversify your investment and in five to six years you will have a ''cash down'' for a little appt.building to mention only this.
Best regards and good chances at school |

I would not listen to any of these people. I'm 18 years old and in the marine corps infintry. I take what little money I earn and buy SUNW stock and sell it a few days later when the price increases. Not only will you find this a fun summer project but you'll make a good $2,000 - $3,000 by the time you start school again. Go to scottrade.com open an account buy the stock and have fun. |
