Can I leave my money in my 401k but not invest in anything?
I only have about $2200 in my 401k but as of last week it was at $2600. And I've contributed a total of $3700 so I'm losing my *** big time with the market the way it is. I transferred my money to an investment with the least risk but I'm still losing. My question is can I keep my money in my 401k but not invest it in anything? I'd rather the money to sit there and do nothing for me instead of losing even more than I already have. Is that possible?
Additional Details
I don't want answers from anybody about what I should do. I've lost 25% in the past month and 40% this year and do not want to lose anymore. ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS IF I CAN INVEST IN NOTHING AND LET THE MONEY JUST SIT THERE AND NOT MAKE OR LOSE ANYTHING. I do not want advice about what I should invest in. It's already invested with the least risk and is losing as fast as when it was invested with the most risk.

You should have a fixed income acct. If you don't know which fund that is you can ask your HR Manager. Money in the fixed income will not grow fast but it certainly will not be involved in this bloodbath hitting the market.

I agree better to sit still than lose big time.

Your 401K should have a Money market or cash option. While not government insured, these funds have been VERY safe historically. But, as others have said, now is the time to move money INTO stocks. Buy Low, Sell High!

Yes, you can. There should be an option for a money market fund. It is basically a savings account.

When you put money in a 401K, you ARE investing. =]

I would put the bulk of the money in a money market fund to protect it, but I would also continue to invest on a regular basis. Wall Street is on sell and there are great bargains out there. Now is the best time to lay the foundations for building wealth. Remember, the market doesn't go up or down, it always goes up AND down. Buy cheap now and wait several years. When the market swings back, you'll be glad you kept investing.

Now is the time to invest. You would be buying at bottom prices. The cash would have to sit in some sort of account. Even if it is a money market. Everything fell in price.
