jorebstock2002 | Can a stock be consider both a 'growth' stock and a 'value' stock at the same time? cant it be only one. |

These terms were applied to the input to a quantitative model developed by an investment management firm in Boston, to differentiate low pe stocks (value) from high pe stocks (growth). The model gained acceptance, and the terrms stuck, so as the quants use the term, no, a stock can't be both. In ordinary usage, a stock can, of course, be both undervalued and a growth stock. |

If use different variables (B:M, growth to market, etc.) to segment growth & value. It is possible for one stock to fall into the growth category using one variable, but value using another.
However, since a cutoff is assigned to a given variable, such as B:M, it is impossible to be on both sides of the cutoff at the same time. |

yes,it can be both because if your stock make some money then it earn more value and there for you will grow on intersted |

These two terms are thrown around so much by the industry that they are in my opinion trite.
I would tend to think of a growth stock as having a consistent growth rate of about 20% annually. Actually, I do not know if there is some fixed % below which a stock is not considered a growth stock. The key is consistent.
To me a value stock is one for which the PEG ratio is less than 1.0. PEG = PE divided by growth rate.
So if I can find a stock with a 20% growth rate and a PEG ratio less than 1.0, I believe I have found a value growth stock.
Low and behold there are several stocks that apparently fit that category.
Cisco is one. Chubb. Goldman Sachs. Halliburton. Lehman Brothers. Leg Mason. Norfolk Southern. To name only a few. |

Usually they are exclusive, but the terms are so flexible that there is considerable overlap.
A value stock is considered undervalued by the market.
A growth stock is currently increasing in price.
Occasionally stocks will exhibit both characteristics, although they do tend to exclude each other. If a stock has been growing long enough to be considered a growth stock, then it is unlikely that it will be undervalued.
Ultimately, all investors are looking for growth, in that we want the stock to buy to increase in price. The difference is which kind of stocks that we believe will provide that growth. |
