I just started investing in the stock market and I'm already losing money!! My current portfolio consists of tickers VTI, AGG, SPIL, EFA, IYR, and IYM. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to be more profitable?

Almost everybody above is correct in one way or another...you just started at the wrong time...but things will change.
The only suggestion I would make is maybe get out of the IYR ( U.S. Real Estate)...just one of the worst sectors to be in right now.
Also, if you're young, forget about the AGG ( bond fund)...you'll buy bonds later when you have profits to " protect".
If you want, move more into the international ..EFA, or even look at a different one EEB ( more directly invested in Brazil, Russia, India and China...the economies that are doing a little better than the U.S. right now)
You don't seem to have much in energy...look into that ..or even " alternative energy" ( PBW, GEX)
...and if you have the stomach for it...right now is the time to invest even more...hard to do... downright depressing,right?...BUT, you'll be buying more shares for the money.
Good luck.

Its not necessarily your choices: you are investing into a "down" market. Markets and sectors don't always go up.

Wow. look at that first answer. Do you think he is just recommending what he has bought and is currently losing on?

If this is money you don't need and won't touch then I would invest into great companies that have been hammered lately. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and US Bank have been hurt by the subprime mess but they are large enough companies to make it through. This is safer and has high risk potential

Or the best method is to buy what Warren Buffett is buying. He doesn't lose. If you sign up at www.gurufocus.com then you get to see what the best investor has recently invested in and at what price.

I think that no matter what you buy right now you will lose money in the short term. It's not you...it's the market

thewallstreethunter
you should start with large cap companies,, and you should check out some stock recommendation sites like www.thewallstreethunter.com they also have some great articles for beginners,, the key is reading everything you can so you know everything there is to know....

Investment depends on a 3 factors:
1.Time for investment
2.Risk on your portfolio
3.Cycle of business
I looked at your Portfolio that tend for stocks and indexes but I have no idea how did you divide your money between those tickers but i would make
65%-75% mix of bonds (Gov+corporate bonds give at this days very nice yield)
25%-35% stocks & commodities and Foreign currency (example look at this days at gold price ! and swiss franc that surge when markets collapse).
this is from my experience (more than 15Y) and then sleep well. the cycle of business is negative for now
if you don't happy with what u have don't be afraid to change cause later can be much worse !

Split your money up. I like 1 high risk, 1 med and 1 low.

High risk/high reward - EGLF.OB
Med risk - AMD, SIRI
Low Risk - PFE
