The best way to get started is to invest in the same things that the best investors are investing in -- the best investors, that have proven that they are the best based on their past performance. This is the idea behind http://www.top10traders.com - this is a free site where you can see what the best traders are buying and selling. You can also create your own portfolio with $100,000 in "play" money. Then throughout the month, a return is calculated for each trader. This month's best traders are listed here:

http://www.top10traders.com/Top10Standings.aspx

Particularly when you are getting started, invest in what the proven best traders are investing in. Then read Business Week or Barron's. Figure out what products you use, that you really like. Find out what companies make those products. Good luck.

The investment world is vast.

For beginners: Check out this book: "Guide to understanding Money and Investing" by the Wall Street Journal.
If you are a self-directed trader - check out www.investopedia.com. They have a host of free pdf documents that takes you from investing basics to derivative analysis.

To fully appreciate the intricacies of the market:
Do a MS or MBA in investment management.

You may want to work with a professional it becomes too much for you or to design a financial plan.
