Some random suggestions (note I take no responsibility for what may happen to your portfolio if you actually take my advice...:) Also these are all American:
Anika Therapeautics (ANIK) A small cap company that is about to release a new wonder gunk that has a lot of cosmetic applications. The stock dropped sharply after they pulled out of a distribution deal, making the company's valuation exceptionally attractive. Risk: medium to high.
Etrade (ETFC) If you have a good, solid time horizon, I think etrade won't go out of business, and if it doesn't go out of business it is certainly worth more than the price its selling for now. Risk: highish.
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) This is probably the safest and best managed company in America. If you want Warren Buffet to manage your money, park it here.
Palomar Medical (PMTI) This company makes laser cosmetic surgery devices and, I think, has been unjustly pummelled by the stock market over the last few months. Risk: medium.
Evergreen Solar (ESLR): Personally I think solar power will be the next big thing. One potential problem for the industry is that solar cells are made using silicon, and there's likely to be a shortage of silicon production over the next few years (it takes a while to build new factories). ESLR apparently has a process for producing solar cells that uses less silicon than some of its competitors.
MEMC (WFR) A company that produces both polysilicon and solar cells. Its not even that expensive.

If your purpose is to invest rather than gamble, buy some good banks. Blue chips like Citibank, Bank of America etc.
They have fallen very heavily recently and they may go down a little more. But a year or two from now, they will be double their present price and in the mean time you collect good dividends. |

Don't buy any bank or financial companies, their in a lot of trouble with the sub-prime loans.. Maybe buy it next mid next year when all the bad news is out... But now look into like Disney or AT&T. Good Luck |

If you don't know much about investing, then you should simply buy a low-cost exchange-traded fund such as SPY or QQQQ.
Your use of the word "shares" suggests you are not American. In that case, find an "index fund" for a stock market near you. |
