If you are 18 and above and can pay the prescribed bank charges for opening and maintaining such account alongwith completing other formalities, you may open a Demat Account. Importantly due to KYC norms, this account can't be opened online. Either you have to visit personally to the depository participant (DP) or entertain the visit of DP's representative to your place to open such account.
If you fulfil all the conditions of opening and maintaining such account of your own, telling your parents about this is entirely your choice.
