Can shares of mutual funds split like stocks do?
If they can, how does one determine if and when that happens?

SWH
No, mutual funds do not split like stocks; however some do pay capital gains, both long term and short term, usually near the end of the year.

You can read the prospectus to determine exactly when the capital gains are issued. Also, if you look carefully at the MF charts, on some you'll see a sharp drop near the end of the year (could be as high as 10%). The price of the fund decreased, not because all the stocks in the fund went down, but because that value was paid out to the share holders. It's sort of like a stock dividend issued by an individual company.

Those answers are wrong .... they "can" split but it's pretty rare because of the payouts

they can split. The price is published in the financial papers

An open ended mutual fund will not split because as money comes in more shares are created. I guess it can theoretically split. I have never seen it. A closed end stock starts with a certain number of shares and is traded like a stock and is listed on a stock exchange. A closed end fund theoretically can split but seldom does because it often trades at a discount to the Net Asset Value (NAV). Exchange Traded Funds which track various industry groups and indexes have have given closed-end funds a great deal of competition.

Normally mutual funds will pay you the dividend, at the end of the financial year. You can either reinvest the money, or deposit into your account.

Splitting the mutual funds is very rare. If it will happen i guess should be after the announcement of the dividend.
