stocks represent companies that go public, or allow people to buy into them with shares. you can buy shares of any public company, most big ones are public like mcdonalds, coca cola, general electric and thousands others. the bigger companies are typically safer and are therefore referred to as "blue chip". the best way for you to invest as a beginner is with mutual funds, which are groups of stocks. this allows you to not face the risk of one individual company, but allows you access to a bunch of them at once. dont just throw money in, go to a broker (check their background at nasd.com) and they will help you. yahoo finance also has real good education links and information. good luck and be ready to lose money!

A stock market is an exchange of financial and emotional ideas.

There is a great old cartoon that explains it really well...I think Elmer Fudd was in it, actually. Anyway, its pretty simple. Businesses go "public" by selling shares of ownership (stock). The monies raised by the sales of shares (capital)are SUPPOSED to go into modernization, research and development, improved distribution systems, etc... things to make the business more profitable. Then, as the company makes more money, the "owners" (stockholders) receive dividends. Also, the stock price will rise when the company performs well so if you bought shares of stock at $5, you can sell them at $10 and make 100% profit. Of course, if the company does not perform well, or the capital is misused, you can LOSE money... that's the risk.

There are a lot of web sites that can help you to understand how stock market works. Here is one simple explanation:

The stock market is an exchange where companies raise capital by issuing shares. These shares represent ownership of that company. The more shares some one owns, the more he owns of that company.

The exchange then helps people to buy and sell these based on their perception of how the company will perform.
If there are many buyers, the price will go up. Conversely if there are more sellers the price will drop.

The shares also make you eligible for any dividends the company decides to reward its shareholders.

I suggest you to open a brokerage account at Zecco and then we will buy a few shares in Pepsi and a few shares in Coca-Cola and make $2.00 USD just for educational purposes. (I am a Portfolio Manager)
