Can the average joe be successful day trading from home??
i was thinking about becoming an investor on the stock market at home. i know many people fail at this sort of venture, is there anyone out there who knows it can be done successfully, and do you think studying for an online degree in economics would help or is it really all down to practical knowledge??

As some one who does it for a living, I can tell you the odds are about 1% if even that, that you will succeed. Reason being is that it is not easy and requires that you be almost like a robot as you have to leave all emotions out of the trade. In addition, there is a big learning curve as I know I threw away about $30,000 before I became successful. Now I know this might not be a popular answer, but I find it easier to daytrade index futures such as the emini S&P vs stocks since they're generally more liquid. Also you don't need a ton of money to do it like you would with stocks. 1 contract of the emini s&p 500 which can be daytraded for $1200 at most commodities brokers, is almost like trading $20,000 in the stock market. Having majored in economics myself, it will help you with long term investing but not daytrading as someone else mentioned.

A degree in economics would be a great help
to you as an investor . But it wont be of any use
to you as a Day Trader.

Day Trading is a very difficult venture and your are
going to need at least $30,000 in a trading account
to make a serious go at it.

If you want to go into day trading I highly recommend y
a book called "trading in the zone"

Good Luck

From my experience, you can never know enough when it comes to the stock market. I also tried to stay home and invest in the stock market, however instead of learning myself I hired a professional to advise me. I still lost an obscene amount of money.

Obviously you know it is very high risk, however I discovered a relatively new website http://www.ftsie.com - The World's 1st Property Stock Market.

You can buy and sell shares in the property of your choice (worldwide). They give very high returns of 50%+ and do both short term and long term investments.

Take a look at there site and see what you think.

Wouldn't recommend it if you want to give up work and do it full time. You would need a stack of cash and unless you have very good knowledge or contacts you will always find out the important information too late after the shares have taken a dive or risen extremely fast. Might make some money but probably too risky for the potential gain.

20 yrs in the business and I have yet to meet a 'successful' day trader.Day trading is gambling-you have hot and cold streaks. As far as learning economics,it is helpful to understand what Wall Street is talking about but I've found that people who are deep into economics and into all the details as to what exactly the economy is doing make absolutely terrible investors.

I have day traded and also invested on the Stock Exchange. 'Invested' is the polite name for gambling where the stock exchange is concerned. Both are extremely interesting and dangerous - what isn't if you want to make money quickly.

If you invest in shares you will need some capital to play with which can be limiting if you are just starting out.

Now I am more of a long term investor as day trading can play havoc with your nerves. Looking at screens all day long and making snap decisions take their toll.

Best of luck which ever course you take. Read Report No. 5 from the web site below

80-90% of "day-traders" fail, whether they are "average joes" or financial professionals. No-one can predict the near-term future. No-one!

You CAN make money investing medium to long term, though. Buy solid stocks in good dividend-paying companies, and hold them a minimum of 13 months (to avoid short-term gains taxes).

NEVER, EVER, EVER pay someone to tell you how toi make money in stocks. If you read a few books on the basics, you will already know more than anyone selling a "system"! They typically know nothing about the market, they just know how to sell snake oil!

You can get lots of good advice free at http://www.fool.com

An economics degree won't help you be a successful day trader.

It's all technical knowledge with regard to stock charts and math with regard to understanding how to make the numbers work.

NO. You need to be hard wired into an ETN and have program trading software. Go and get a job.

Stock market investment doesn't automatically make you rich. If you have a sufficiently broad-based portfolio, you should be able to expect a reasonable return on your money over and above inflation. People who make the big gains do so at the expense of people who make big losses. It's like a poker game: the pros will lure you in so they can make money out of you.
