You can make money in stocks, but in the short term it's risky. If you find sound companies with relatively good financials, these should do well in the long term (3-5 years). I would suggest putting some in stocks, but only if you can live without it for the long term. If you think you'll need the money in 6 months, it's safest not to bet in times like these.
Also, to learn more about stocks, I'd check out Stock Investing for Dummies, by Wiley. I've read it and learned a lot from it. Also, Making Money in Stocks is a good primer by William O'Neill (founder of Investor's Business Daily) about what to look for in good companies. Websites include investopedia.com and finance.yahoo.com |

This may be the best time you'll ever see in your life to invest in stocks! You'll be buying them more cheaply than millions of other people who've bailed out at these low prices. The biggest caveat is not to invest any funds in the stock market that you'll need in the next 10 years or less. That means that before you invest in stocks, you need to have 3-6 months living expenses socked away in something risk-free, like a bank money market account. Stuff happens in life and having to run up credit cards or or sell your stocks at the wrong time to get money are not good choices. If you've got that covered, and this is also not money you'll need to buy a new car, house down payment,etc, then it's now time to work on building your wealth! You can also start with as little as $250.00 using what's called a Direct Purchase Plan and buy stock directly from the company you're interested in. Your local library has tons of books on investing in stocks (at a very reasonable price: free!) and there are some great websites to try also. One online place to start is www.morningstar.com Sign up for the free registration, go to the tab labeled "Personal Finance", scroll down to the "Investing Classroom > / Course Catalog" and you're on your way! |
