Possible, yes. Likely, no. Here is why. Two reasons mainly. First, for every one stock that that does happen to there are 10,000 maybe that that will never happen to. Second, if you do buy the one in 10,000 when it doubles, triples, quintriples in price there is about a 99.99% probability that you will take your profits and run. The financial press loves to tell you about the Walmarts and Microsofts that do make phenonminal gains, but they almost never tell you about the other 10,000 that do not. |

Theoretically yes--though for it to take less than a century or two you'd essentially have to find the next Microsoft and hold it for a long time. Note that over the long term the market has tended to go up quite a lot--the Dow went from 43 to 12,000 in a century or so--but that still won't quite make you a millionaire off of 1000. |
