You definitely can do your own investing, but you have to go through a brokerage house if you are investing in stocks, mutual funds, options ..,
Fidelity, Scottrade, and eTrade all have decent websites with low brokerage fees. These are discount brokers and you are entirely responsible for you investment decisions with these companies.
Make sure that you spend a lot of time researching and developing your investment strategies. I would recommend "paper trading" any strategy that want to use for several months before investing real $$.
I use Fidelity and they have a lot of free research on their site - the others probably do as well. |

If you're talking investing in stocks or other publicly traded entities, you do need a broker (since you don't own a seat on the exchange); but you can use an online broker like ameritrade.com or etrade.com to trade stocks for very low commissions (usually less than $10 per transaction).
For other investments, like angel investing in a startup, you don't need a "middleman" but you do need a lawyer to draft the contract (which is kinda pricey). |

Absolutely, and to Leverage your money, buy rental real estate. Property is on sale now, the long term growth will out perform almost all other investment vehicles, especially when all tax benefits are factored in. |

You do NOT need a broker or brokerage house to invest in stocks. Many companies have DRIPs -- Dividend ReInvestment Plans and lots of these plans allow to invest your initial investment directly with the company without brokers. For any company you are interested in, check their web site, usually under "investor relations."
Also check out the web site: www.directinvesting.com.
No load mutual funds can be bought directly from the mutual fund company, without the need for a broker. |
