Coin collection: Is this a rip off?
I saw an ad in a catalog selling a 1934 penny, nickle, dime, quarter, and a half dollar all for $27. How much is all that really worth? Is it worth more than $27? Please list your sources.
Additional Details
After I get the coins I want to sell them to tey and get a profit.

The big thing with a coin is 1) what year is it? 2) what mint mark is it? 3) what condition is the coin in? As an example I have used the 1934 US half dollar, which is called the Walking Liberty Half:

Date G F EF AU 60 63 64 65
1934 10 12 15 35 90 110 135 525
1934-D 10 12 35 90 165 230 380 1575
1934-S 10 12 35 110 375 800 1300 4800

(most likely the colums won't align, but all the coin prices are shown in my sources link)

Example, the 1934-D walking liberty half in EF condition is worth $35.

You can see that depending on the date, mint mark, and the condition the coin can be worth $10 to over $4800. I say over 4800, because I only show the condition up to 65.

Most likelly you would get a 1934, or 1934-D, or 1934-S in "G" condition, which means good, and goes for $10. They would then select the worst condition and most plentiful mint mark, for the penny, nickle, dime, and quarter, for the year 1934, and I am sure they would all add up to less than $27.

The mint mark means where the coin was minted, depending on where the coin was minted would determine the value. When there is no mint mark that is the Philidelphia Mint, D is Denver and S is San Francisco.

The conditions go from g as in good, f as in fine, ef as in extra fine, au as in almost uncirculated, and then they start the uncirculated category, which means the coins has never been in circulation, almost a perfect coin, and there are several categories, 60, 61, 62, all the way to 69. With 69 being the perfect coin.

Note: the biggest thing with coins is the grading of them, it is not easy. If you buy a coin from a dealer most likely he will grade the coin very high, therefore he can get more for it, if you sell a coin to a dealer, most likely, he will grade the coin down, and therefore, won't pay as much. My point, you had better know how to grade coins if you are going to trade them, and if you are just buying a few or selling a few, you had better get multiple opinions on the coin's condition before buying or selling.

Michael
First off you need to know all the dates(and coin mint marks), types and conditions of the coins. A 1934 cent in average grade is worth under a quarter to dealers. The nickel, if it's a Buffalo nickel is worth about $1-$2 in average grade for common dates. Jefferson nickels are collectable only in mint state, unless it's a 1950-D. For the dimes and quarters, you need to know the type... common date silver dimes and quarters post-1930 are worth silver bullion or slightly over bullion in average grades. A Walking Liberty half in low grade is worth about $6 unless scare date, while the Franklin and Kennedy silvers are $5 and under. All in all, I'd say that $27 is too steep for the lot.

Shinji
yes, because you are a paying 27 dollars plus shipping in order to recieve .91 cents that you will never spend. and it will never gain any value over time.

That is the "general" price, if you go to eBay, you can save a few dollars. Thous ads are for grandparents buying things for the children, not real collecting. Always remember, any time there is a advertisement, someone is looking to make a profit.

Of course it's a joke, or everyone else would be doing it also, especially those that are selling. You'll get worthless coins in bad condition if you buy.

Why is it?
It's fair.

pristar
Coins is also sort of investment. When the coins get older and harder to find, collectors might buy for a higher price. check out http://www.goldresources.net for many gold and silver coins auctions.

It all depends upon the condition, where it was minted, what country and the fine print. They may show you a mint condition coin but the fine print will say fair condition, etc. At the least, in U.S. currency it'd be worth 91 cents. And, if it's in pretty bad condition, that's about all it'd be worth.

Especially, if you saw it on TV they're going to make money on it at your expense. Look it up on Ebay.

If the coins are uncirculated they would be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $20, circulated coins will be worth less depending on their condition.

yes it is a ripoff and if you think you are going to get some rare coin you should know that they farm the good coins before sending you the packages -- all of those pacages on ebay are scams
