I suggest an "index" mutual fund to get started. There are several available. They do require a minimum investment however.

If you learn to save and stay away from credit cards balances, you win the half the bettle. Read Investor Daily News paper. Yahoo Finance has lots of good stuff. For now save money in the bank. Market Watch has good stuff too. Spend time on web is the key. Lots of stock trading games to practice.
Good Luck

the best thing to do is go talk to an adviser. I don't know of any firm that will charge to just to talk to an adviser. If you decide to open an account with that firm the key thing to check for is account fees, there are still some firms out there that do not charge an account fee. If you are interested in mutual funds only you can contact the mutual fund directly the fees are generally cheaper. You also need to check on sales charges class shares some may have charges if you sell be for a certain time. If you decide to go for bonds check coupon rates, maturity dates, and taxes, some can be tax free depending the type of bond, state and county...but an adviser can explain those as well.
good luck now is the perfect time to start.
