Day Trading?
Anybody out there day trade as a full time profession? If so, how long and how successful have you been?

A nobody
Basically I'm a position trader, however I will not walk away from a day trade. - You never get hurt by taking a profit.

Like any other profession, you must educate in what you are doing. What you'll really need is:
1- A written sound trading/investment plan with rules that will not only help you but more importantly protect you, mostly from yourself.
2 - Sufficient trading/investment capital. Use your own money, there’s no need to go into debt so that you trade/invest.
3 - A written money management program in place. Remember never invest 100% of your capital into any one security.
If all of the above is properly in place, you can come out of the gate, with never having a loosing year.

You don;t have to have 100% of the trades go in your favor, you can be right 60% of the time and make decent money, if your right greater that 65% your chances of making big money is very possible

There's no time limit, it depends on how hard you work and how quick you are in understanding what you are studying.
Like any other profession, you get no where with hard work and a very stern commitment

TO RON BARU - day trading is not scalping, there is a big difference.

Yeah, have been day trading futures for a decade

Have been succesful - that's all I will say about that

... Technical analysis is essential., but have to understand the fundamentals that drive the markets

You can get into it yourself quite easily, barriers to entry are low, but the failure rate is high ... I see people come and go all the time in my office

I agree on the Steve Nison book, an excellent read. I'm not so much a daytrader, more of a short term swing trader but I make some day trades in there too.

I also agree that technical analysis is the only way to go if you're going to make it as a short term trader. Long term maybe company earnings and fundamental data will work, but in the short term it is nothing more than supply & demand, a stock is worth what the guy next to you is willing to pay for it - nothing more, nothing less.

If you're looking for ideas I would highly recommend checking out www.GreenRoomStocks.com. They post end of day swing trading picks with clear cut entry and exit picks, and also post nightly watchlists and market commentary that I've found very helpful in staying on the right side of the market. They have a live chat room with up to the minute market commentary during the trading day, and do weekend video reviews, highlighting entry and exit/support & resistance points on stock charts. They also have some fantastic books for sale on daytrading, swingtrading, etc.

I hope this helped, good trading to ya!

To clear the air about day trading or "scalping" or being an "active trader": The account must have - at all times - $25,000 U.S. PLUS the amount of the first trade. As soon as the account is below that $25K, a different set of rules comes into play.

WITH LESS THAN $25,000 IN THE ACCOUNT:
The trader is permitted to do 3 intra-day trades - in and out of the same trade on the same day - in any continuously rolling 5-day period. This includes weekends and legal holidays.

AS SOON AS THE beginning of the 4th trade is done, the trader is labeled as a “pattern day trader” and the account may be frozen.

WITH $25,000 OR MORE IN THE ACCOUNT: On any given day, the trader can enter and exit as many trades as he/she wants.

The guidelines I provided are the VERY basic ones. Its up to you to make the decision which broker has the right kind of account at the fees and commissions you want to pay and can afford.

I swing trade. I know some folks - about 30 - who day trade. I listen to their experiences. AND they listen to mine.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Been day trading in stocks and options for the past five years, started when I was 18, and make a better living trading than my friends who have jobs do.

I trade spreads on options and do more swing trading than day trading. Most of my positions last for a few days to a month in duration. I traded small amounts when I started to get a feel for it and have gotten a bigger account over time.

Technical analysis is the only way I go. It's the way to make money in the markets.

Some great books to read are "Mastering the Trade" by John Carter and "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques" by Steve Nison.

I can't tell you how many people still tell me I can't trade the markets for a living. I always smile and know my P/L says otherwise. Good luck!

Matt
