Dividend's?
are dividend's based on the gross dollar amount or the amount of shares? Could someone explain!

Companies generally declare dividends as a certain amount per share. To determine how much you will receive, multiply the "per share" amount announced by the company times the number of shares you own as of the "record date" (which will also be announced by the company and is usually a few weeks before the payment date).

Dividends are paid quarterly, and based on number of shares one owns. So if you own 100 shares and the quarterly dividend is 25 cents a share you will get $25

The Yield, however is based on the share price. So if a stock pays 25 cents a share quarterly, you calculate the annual payment of dividends, that would be 25x4 = $1 since there are 4 quarters in a year. So if the stock price is $50, then the yield would be $1 divided by $50 or ,02 or 2% yield.

Almost all dividends are paid quarterly.

Dividends are announced on a dollars per share basis. The yield is usually given as an annual number, though, so you have to divide it by 4 to get the quarterly number.

Intradaytrades
Dividends are paid out at the discretion of the company. They are a way to distribute profits back to the shareholders.

They are paid out based on how many shares you own.

Sometimes it can depend on the actual type of shares as to whether you will be paid dividends or not. So you should check whether the shares you purchase are eligible.

James and Zyberian -- you are both right. Stock dividends are usually paid quarterly. Many Mutual Funds pay dividends annually in December, some twice a year in December and again at the end of March, others in June and December. And all are based on number of shares owned.

James Dividends are NOT always paid every quarter most are either semi or annunally. I echo the first answer though.
