Do companies really care if their stock goes up or down? See details below:?
Believe it or not, I trade stocks for a living. But only for 5 years now. I am learning a lot. Steep learning curve too. I've been reading all kinds of things, books, charts, ananlyst ratings, etc.... But I was just wondering if the CEO's, CFO's etc really care all that much about their company's stock price (except for the fact that they probably own stock in it, so forget that part). Does it really affect the company's ablility to do business? Thoughts? Thanks for your answers in advance. Dave

And yeah, "spike and spikey" I am a stock trader, running a 34/% gain this year. I don't have to know everything to make good decisions.

Ignoring management's stock ownership, stock price has no direct financial impact on the company, unless ... If the company wishes, it may do a secondary offering of new shares of stock at any time.

If the stock price is doing well, a modest sized offering can be done without upsetting investors too much and can raise a lot of money for the company.

Finally, if the stock price really tanks, then the company is much much more vulnerable to a hostile takeover. If I am an upper management exec., I guess I would like to keep my job.

I might lose my job anyway purely because of the poor stock price performance. The board of directors might fire me. That is what happened to Bob Nardelli at Home Depot.

yes, they care, its an indicator of profits and how well they're doing their job

Companies have to care for their stock value because companies are owned by shareholders. Shareholders care about their fortunes in those invested companies which are measured by up and down of their stock prices. If the level goes down, shareholders can call for the heads of the management, just like Citibank in which one major shareholder called for the former CEO to get out once the amount of the write-offs of subprime was revealed.

I'm not an expert, but from what I've observed, a company has more money to work with if you buy stock in it, thus allowing it to expand and attract more people to invest in it.

Listen bro, it is definitly important. It's a measure of how well run a company is. For example Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, he gets a salary of 1 USD and the rest is rewarded to him as stock options. So.. if he does a good job he gets a big check and vice versa. Good Luck trading in this bear market.- hurts to say so

Corporations use Employee Stock purchase plans, options, and provide compenations to their senior leaders through grants. Of course they care what their stock price is. Most CEO's make 10 to 20 percent of their money via salary. All the rest comes from stock. The further down the food chain you go, the more money comes from salary, and the less it comes from stock. The very bottom of the food chain doesn't get a salary at all, just hourly, and they get no stock. For them, they do not care what the stock does. They can't see that if it goes up, they get to keep their job, and if it goes down, they are at risk of loosing it.

Yes because when stock prices go up, that's an indicator of good management and people are buying. Remember, for long term stock prices are determined by earnings. More earnings, higher stock prices.

Whew that's scary you are a stock trader???!!!

I work for a large manufacturing company and I like to spend 80% of my business time working with the top 80% producers...If sales are down or flat the stock goes down and it freaks out the investors! I am glad I lead a team that works with the retailer that is currently the Wallstreet sweetheart...I trust they know their business in good times and in bad.
PS I work for one of the largest manufactors in the world, they are no. 1 in their line of business and quess what their stock is still up!

No they don't care. Most have the Golden chute, the contract that gives, regardless of how the company does. Look at history of companies like Polaroid, Enron, etc. If you want to invest, look to a no-load mutual fund. Let the people who do it for a living do it.
