Only those with crystal balls can answer this question accurately. Unfortunately, I am not privy to one. Sorry. |

I work for a bank, and I think they'll probably stay the same or go up. One way to help slow inflation is to raise interest rates.
My boyfriend, the economics major, thinks that they'll probably stay the same or go down, because our economy is slowing and one way to help it increase is to lower rates and thus get more money into circulation, but again, increasing the money in circulation quickly often causes higher inflation.
The Fed does a very careful balancing act, and often their choices take months to really play out. |

Actually, there are no indications for rate movement that are accurate. If there were that would take all the fun out of the future's market, as well as a lot of other markets. Head economists at the Federal Reserve would loose their jobs.
Rates either move up, down or remain static, and they do so without regard for what someone says about it ahead of time.
Now, you first asked if I expect rates to go up or down in the near future. That I can take a stab at....
Next year is election year. Rates will probably increase seriously at least following the election, if not sooner.
You heard it here first. |

i think interest rates will either stay the same or go down but certainly not up. there is a lot of debt from home equity loans that have variable interest rates. with the cost of energy skyrocketing, and inflation at 3.x%, the consumer is getting squeezed to the brink.
The fed knows that increasing interest rates on a slowing economy is also not a good idea. for that reason they will at least stay the same. if there is a serious slow down on the horizon, then the IR will go down. Thats my take -- have fun. |

What has been happening for the last week or two in the US markets is interesting. The rate on AAA grade bonds like the gov. treasuries has been going down as investors flee the volatile stock market and lower grade bonds.
People are now afraid of defaults on lower grade debt & are selling those securities. Their rates or yields have gone way up, especially just today. In other words, the "credit spreads" have increased dramatically.
If you are willing to take on some risk, you can get some pretty high yields now. |

it depends if people will need alot of loans of not; a lot (up) little (down) [as this would motivate people to get them] it's the (business) law of supply and demand. |
