Do you have to have good credit to buy stocks?
I recently purchesd $2000.00 worth of stocks from charels schwab, and now they have sent me a letter saying that I need to liqudate (close) all my assets from there company because my credit score its too low. What does my credit have to do with buying somthing with my own cash no credit is needed its my money and I pay them and they get there commission

I have heard from others on Yahoo that they have also had problems with some brokers rejecting their accounts. It does puzzle me as to why they might do this if one is buying from cash in ones account. Someone answered that it is because some brokers issue credit cards as a part of the account. Perhaps you can check with another broker. I do know for a fact that they do check your credit. I do not know if all require good credit.

Try calling TD Ameritrade. Talk to them about transferring your account and see what they say. They did reject my on line application but did accept my paper application. Also try Scottrade.

You have to read the fine print on these companies b4 getting involved...yes you do need good credit to buy stocks.

In case of extreme loss, you have to be able to prove that you can pay a large loss if it goes into negative territory.

Your credit kinda does matter when buying stocks. Many brokers will want to know that you are creditworthy before getting into a long-term relationship with you. That way they won't have to worry that you may not have access to cash (or good enough credit that you are able to secure a credit line) to cover the broker's fees and commissions (plus any additional costs they incur from managing your investments) if the value of your stocks go into negative territory. Remember that the stock market is always a gamble, and whether the stocks you bought gain or lose value, the broker will still expect to get paid. Many small investors don't fully understand how this works. If the stocks you buy take a serious battering on the market, you can easily lose most or all of the money you invested. And that is just money lost to the decline of the value of the stock. And, on top of that loss you will still owe the stock broker his commission and fees.

Consider that most people get a bad credit rating because they didn't pay their bills on time. Many Wall Street brokerage firms don't want to take on that additional risk of dealing with people who may leave them holding the bag. What I'm surprised about is that they didn't tell you this before they took your $2,000.

But its no big deal. Liquidate the stocks and take whatever is left of you money back. There are plenty other firms out there that you can do business with.

Perhaps they are afraid you might want to get into futures?

Seems pretty crappy business practice to me...

Seems like a crappy business practice. Close it, demand that they don't charge you commissions for anything (since you're only closing it because they wanted you to), and go to somewhere like eTrade or Sharebuilder.com(I use Sharebuilder and have been quite happy with them).

PS My credit's not great, and I'm only investing about $3500 with them--so I'm by no means a "large investor".

you would be better off w/ an online broker anyway... less in commissions....

Did you sign anything stating you credit score wouldn't drop or anything to that nature??

I wouldn't pay them commission if you have to liquidate or if they force you to... also, i wouldn't liquidate if you are going to take a loss... i don't know how they can make you do that... seems shady to me.. contact another branch and discuss with them...

my guess is they are scared you are going to want to trade on margin or futures... you credit score would indicate financial difficulty and they wouldn't want that if you are trading on money you don't have b/c when you start trading margins and futres.... it doesn't go by how much you have in the brokerage with them... you can be reliable for more.... just risk mitigation on their part, but still crappy...

WHat everyone already saaid...

PLUS

Brokers have a responsibility to be sure your financial situation is apporopriate for your trading. A really low credit score or a bunch of outstanding debt may indicate that you could later become a "problem" client who loses money and then blames them for letting you do it. It happens. If you opened a margin account, you could try switching it to a cash account. You don't say what stocks you bought, but if you are playing with hi-risk stocks or penny stocks that could be part of it too.

I agree that you should switch brokers, but be honest with the next one so that you avoid the situation again. And you do not have to sell teh stock, you can just have it moved to a new broker. Be sure that Schwab does not charge you any fees for closing your account or for failing to meet their minimum activities while you switch.
