Do you have to stay at a company for a certain number of years for your 401K contribution to be yours to keep?
my co. contributes 50 cents to the dollar....

every company has their own policy. mine you have to be with for five years to be fully vested (meaning you get to keep everything they contribute.) it is 20% the first year, 40% the 2nd and so on. you should ask your h.r. person.

The money you put in to the 401(k) is yours. The money your employeer puts in may or may not be depending on their vesting schedule. If you ask for this from the plan administrator they should be able to provide that to you.
Also remember if you take the money out it will be taxable and may be subject to a 10% penalty if you don't meet certain criteria.

it depends but it is common to have a vesting period for a 401K.

Vesting means you have to stay a certain time to keep the contribution.

Check with HR about the specifics of the company 401K Plan.

depends on what the company says as the number of yrs for me it is 5 yrs and I have been with the company 6

Monty
Ordinarily you have to stay at a company for a few years (5-7 years) before you are fully vested and can withdraw company-contributed funds. The funds which you contribute are always yours to keep. The only restrictions are on employer-contributed funds and the time period varies from company to company.

The money that you invest is yours no matter how long you stay. Although the company match is not usually. If you are there for more than five yrs then that money will be yours also. Dept. of Labor has changed the rules in this matter it used to be ten yrs. You can more answers at their website.

With most companies you have to become fully "vested" before you are able to keep their contributions. Each company has a different amount of time that they set. Some companies also allow you to become partially vested so that you can keep some of the money before you are fully vested.
