You make money in the stock market by buying low and selling high. The trick is to know when a stock is low and when it is high. People do it every day.

Yes. One can make money in stock market provided he/she follows certain rules/principles in buying and selling.
In-spite of all precautions, one may lose in some shares and gain in some other shares. There will be overall gains and we can make up to 25 to 30% profits.
There can be exceptions like some people made huge profits and some lost huge amounts in short periods. It depends upon risk taking abilities/qualities. We are not discussing about such cases here.
Rules/principles.....
Invest on long term basis.
Patience pays many times
Invest on the basis of company's/promoter's back ground and reputation.
Select promising sectors for future growth.
Select companies of low P/E ratios with good fundamentals.
Avoid speculation
Buy during low market sentiment
Sell when the market is near the highest.
Do not take sentimental decisions. Go by logic.
Take calculated risk.
With the above criteria also we may commit mistakes at times but we will succeed in general.
As the global economy is growing, share values will undoubtedly go up in future but selection of good companies and sectors is very important.

People make and lose money everyday in the stock market.
We tend to hear of the people that make a lot of quick money. Nobody wants to talk to their friends or family, if they had lost lot of $$$$... The trick is to know how the stock markets operate and what factors play into the price of a stock -- to move it up or down.
