Do you think gold is a good investment?

I have never been a gold bug. Traded gold once this year via GLD index.

I recently posted about hyper inflation that we may face as early as next year.

If you are buying gold for an inflation hedge which historically has not been successful - at least for the last 30 years - look at any long term gold chart - it has underperformed inflation, where equities have outperformed by a long shot; I would be looking at "Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities" (TIPS).

TIPS are US government guaranteed, and is a hedge for inflation. Gold is backed by no one and has no industrial use.

I have been involved with gold/silver/mining for over 30 years, and would never use the word "investment", but "speculation" instead.
This asset class can be more risky than others, requires quite a bit of research, and probably is not for most people.

Having said that, if you want to buy a few ounces of gold to put away "just in case" as insurance for the currently unstable financial markets, and you do not go beyond 5% of your net worth, it would be a reasonable speculation. A gold ETF like NYSE:GLD could also work

It may be good as a part of an overall portfolio, but it is not very useful or exciting. If you like watching paint dry or a spider spinning a web, this would be a good holding for you.

On the other hand, if you would like to know for certain that your money would double in value in 8 years, you can respond to my email address, and I will send you something to look at offered by one of the largest companies on the planet.

Well I agree with "speculation" and 5% guideline and disagree with the "backed by" comments.TIPS are only as good as the currency and government-reported inflation numbers. I assume the government has been lying for years about inflation and will continue to do so. They HAVE to, or costs of social security and tax bracket indexation would force them into bankruptcy. And we saw our currency drop by 50% in value over 8 years, and none of that goes into the TIPS calculation.

No, real estate is at this point. That's if you can hold on to it for a few years.

In every shopping mall in America there are 10,000 gold necklaces and rings and bracelets for sale. How valuable can that be. It is a horrible investment..
