Do you think gold is the best investment in todays market?

Some gold in the portfolio works well as a diversifier, but it hasn't been a good LONG-term investment. If you had bought gold in 1980, you still wouldn't have a gain.

It's a good investment against a falling US Dollar and it should reward you well over the long term. No one knows for sure what the future brings so diversify in order to obtain your long term goals.

Gold is like the stock market. It will always be cyclical. For the long haul, it will be a good investment. Consult these charts to see where it has been over the past few years:

I would buy $20 American Double Eagles which will always be sellable.
I am an amature gold collector, like you.

vegas_iwish
Best-no but I have a position. Gold not something to have more than 10% of your assets in with 5 being smarter. Diversify vs speculating. There is no "best".

like others said...short term and very little % of your portfolio should be in gold. Here is a stock to look at for a nice gold play without buying gold itself.....

In the long run commodities return the rate of inflation. Gold is a commodity. If you are looking for a speculative short term investment gold may be alright. Over a longer horizon 10-30 years, it will gain you nothing, only keep pace with the rate of inflation. Over the long run houses are this way as well. The only way to appreciate an asset is to grow, gold cannot grow, houses do not grow. Stocks of good companies can grow and will return more than the rate of inflation over the long run.
