Do you think now is a good time to buy stock from GM or do you think they will go bankrupt?

No, don't buy GM. If you really want to buy an automaker buy Ford. But Ford is in no way a sure thing, so don't take too big of a position. If Congress doesn't come up with a bailout of some type (very unlikely), then GM will have to file for bankruptcy, and even if that doesn't drag Ford down with it, it will have a profound affect on their stock price. If the automakers do get a bailout, then Ford shareholders may be the ones to come out the worst in the deal, because Ford is still a viable company through '09, and the bailout will no doubt be detrimental to shareholder value, as the government will get preferred shares, warrants, or senior debt. None of which are good for the shareholders.

Still, if you must have an automaker, go with best of breed, and that's Ford.

There is probably a 40% chance GM will declare bankruptcy, but even if they don't it will be years before they get back on their feet. There are better ideas out there.

I think GM is going down. The CEO is an idiot. Their cars still suck gas.

Go for Ford. I read from either Cramer or from CNBC that that stock is expected to quadruple. Their Escape had the best gas mileage last year. And their innovations are improving. They just might live.

They just negotiated a bankruptcy proceeding in case you weren't paying attention.

If they go bankrupt I think it will be 11 reorganization. This is a tricky era in determining the correct timing to invest.
I was involved in a similar situation with service merchandise. In their reorganization plan was a clause that allowed them to not honor the debt on the outstanding common stocks.

In other words if they could have pulled it off my stock holding were worthless.

Ray
umm, don't do it. Too big of a risk with low returns if it survives. Try something that is just now starting to go up a little bit.

Depends. If you're a gambling man, Buy GM. If you're not a big risk taker, Stay away.

Do you really think anyone knows? A wiseman told me once, "Never give advice, and never take advice."
