lentil | Do you think the current bank failures are a result of GOP deregulation? |
It seems this is all a redux of the S&L bailouts during the Reagan Era. Reagan may be gone, but his Reaganomics live on as Bushonomics and McCain-omonics, as I just read on yahoo news how he's backed deregulation too:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080918/pl_politico/13568 Additional Details ack it posted twice! so i will revise this one to ask you if you think bank bailouts are a form of corporate socialism? |

it's disturbing i agree -- the media manipulation of the republicans to slander even the term "liberal" and expressions like "tax and spend" have no basis of fact and in earnest are laughable in the face of the massive debts and no-bid contractor fraud, summed up now with the GOP bailouts of corrupt financial institutions. someone's getting rich off these ventures -- all off the taxpayer dollar. |

No, the current financial situation is a result of several different factors. First the companies themselves, many of them took on way too much risk. Second, Naked Short Selling sped up the process of the collapse. Third, deregulation has gone on for a long time and cannot just be pegged to one political party. That being said, I think we will see much more regulation in the financial services industry and the insurance industry as a result of the collapse of several firms in the industry. |

Deregulation has been going on since the 70's starting with Democratic president Jimmy Carter. Every administration since has had a hand in deregulating banks. BTW Clinton was the worst. |

No,
Everybody wants to point fingers these days... instead of looking in the mirror. All Americans have a responsibility in this matter.
Although many are directly responsible, all of us collectively are addicted to debt and every time the bill comes we never want to pay.
The game is chess it ain't checkers.
America has just been put in check. |

Deregulation is definitely the culprit, but it's probably not fair to just blame the Republicans, although they seem to favor less regulation in general. |

You are mixing apples with oranges. There has been a lot more regulation , that there has been deregulation during the last 30 years. Look at your chart, there is revenues, and spending. It is the spending that is out of hand. Remember, the president cannot spend a penny, only congress can. Under Clinton, we had a republican congress for the first time in 40 years. It shows that balance of powers work. When Bush 43 got in, the republicans failed. Bush went to the center and spend, spend spend, well beyond the cost of the war. The republicans deserved to lose the congress. Voters aren't that dumb. These bank failures, deserve a lot of blame, well beyond congress regardless who is at fault. |

The current bank failures are not because of Republican policy. Fannie and Freddie have been creations of the congressional Democrats and the Clinton white house, designed to make mortgages available to more people, and as it turned out, some people who couldn't afford them. Fannie and Freddie have also been places for big Washington democrats to go to work in the semi-private sector and pocket millions.
