The stock market seldom goes anywhere in a straight line. There are usually many ups and downs in any market. But of course, not all ups and downs are equal.
In a Bear Market, the downs are usually bigger than the ups. And the average direction is down. Which I believe is the situation now.
Stock market prices are based on company earnings and the so called P/E ratios. The economy is getting worse. Company earnings will likely get a lot worse at the end of this year and during the next year. And this means that the present stock prices will very likely go down.
Another reason for stock prices to go down is the decreased lending by banks and the disappearance of Investment Banks in USA. Investment Banks and many Hedge Funds have been playing the stock market with a lot of borrowed money. And now they can't borrow and take the same risks as before. Which means that there is going to be less money in the stock market and less buying of stocks as a consequence.
And the third reason for stock prices to go down is the fact that many Baby Boomers are getting close to retirement age. Many of them are very worried about their retirement savings. Many of them are now pulling their money out of mutual funds and stocks. And probably not many of them will ever return to investing in the stock market again. Because at their age, taking that much risk is imprudent. And they will know it too from their present experience. |

As long as greed rules wall-street, yes. Check out who is cashing in off the "bail-out" and what the money is actually being used for. |

It's hard to say. It will depend upon whether Obama decides to raise the Capital Gains tax back to 28% from its current 20%. If the taxes are raised, investments will dry up and we will sink to newer lows. If the rate remains the same, we probably have hit bottom.
There aren't any investors in the market right now. The market is one giant casino right now. |

Investment success isn't about trying to time the market, or play the market - but rather being in the market over time.
The largest market participants are institutional traders, so the change in capital gains doesn't have as much effect as many people believe. Also, with trillions of market dollars being in IRA, tax deferred accounts, that get withdrawn traditionally at income tax rates, that further dilutes the impact of cap. gains changes.
There is volitility, but at the same time, there is great value. It is not likely that we've seen the lowest market day, but fundamentally over time, the market will increase from here. |

Short term, YES, the market will work it's way up or down in next few quarters depends on economic data, jobless rate and GDP. I think the support is at 7600 near term. |

as long as there is all this fear out there... the stock market will continue to drop......
and if obama raises capital gains tax that will be more bad news...
the stock market surely has to be close to its bottom..
and it cannot stay down forever... what comes up must come down, and what goes down must come up.... if obama does his part and makes things better.. we will rise again |

Yes, and rise and drop for a few years to come, trading between 5k and 12k. |
