Do you think the stock market will ever crash again?
just wondering especially with the way things are going right now economic wise. I wonder if Obama will make anything better?

ABSOLUTELY!

Historically we have always had periods of growth, recession, and bubbles. You can bet that all of these things will repeat again. The question is on what day?

I am not 100% convinced of the market rally. I think it is mutual fund managers and pension funds with cash who are pumping the market along with some short covering. Mr. and Mrs. America are still stuffing their mattresses with cash, still dealing with credit card, auto loan, and mortgage issues. Property values are not going up, jobs are being lost in large historical numbers; people are not buying much according to retail sales reports, but can we rally? Sure, the market rallied all the way through spring 2007 when the real estate market peaked in 2006.

And we still have a ton of mortgage re-sets that will occur over the next several years. Hyper inflation could be a bigger issue than what we had with the banks in 2008. When is the question?

OK, next Fed Chairman, raise interest rates to curb future inflation, and watch more banks fail, and more people default on mortgages. This could be a death spiral on the market.

I wish Obama luck. I don't think there is any one person or government who can just legislate us out of this mess. It will take time. The government can't make people buy things.

I think it is very possible that we may retest the 2008 lows in the market sometimes in 2009. What events trigger that I do not know 100% at this time.

edit:
OK, for the anal retentive. First, I guess one needs to define the word "crash." There is no generally accepted definition of a market "crash" in point or % terms.

For the h8rs: Got another view, post it, instead of thms dn spamming everyone. If one does not want to hear a reality check, don't read my posts.

Close eyes and say, "there's no weeds in my garden, there's no weeds in my garden." What happens after a year of that. Correct, the weeds took the garden.

it's crashing now...

Remember this...the stock market and the economy are just like a bad marriage. They are going to end...the direction that is.

Now, switching from analogies to cliches, nothing lasts forever. With the market and the economy, everything is temporary.

Edit: I just read Net Advisor's comments and that guy is dead on! You nailed it, heck of an assessment of the situation.

The market is crashing right now. We are heading into a depression. 2009 will be no different then 2008 and it will now hit the commercial section. With a dismal Christmas season, businesses are going to fail this year. Circuit City closed in 2008. KB Toys failed. More businesses will fail. And with an ailing car industry, plants will close down. People will lose their jobs and unemployment will go up.

People are scared to spend money right now because of the housing market and the bank failures. It's just a trickle down effect. After the commercial zone is hit, more banks will bottom up. The last thing that will be hit in about 2010 will be credit card companies. Those will bottom up too. We're talking about a lot of debt and headaches. And if you think Obama is the key to fixing it, your a fool.

Get ready for riots in the streets, food riots. The military is already preparing for it. And if you don't believe it, look at Greece.

people freak out about it, but no. No one else who has answered your question has had 27 years of investment banking and training. Wall street is so heavily regulated that is impossible to simply crash the market by massive sell orders, there are limits placed. back in October, if those limits werent in place, it would have crashed, but it has since recovered a bit. Dont believe anyone who blames one or two things that is causing the significant drop in the stock market, its a million variables. Its like "global warming". Earths winds and temperature are affected by tectonic movements, clouds and atmosphere, hell even sunspots are responsible for a big impact! So days when its a record high we freak out, but when the other 364 days of the year when its averaging like last year, it goes unmentioned.
Rest assured, this worlds economy is damaged but is recovering, the time is now when millionaires are made.
