It's to do with Homeland Security Acts, ie. ensuring that the wrong kind of people don't bring large sums of money into the country and use it for terrorist or other illegal activities.
You can do it if you register it with the appropriate department. |

You can bring any amount of money. You simply have to declare amounts over $10,000 to Customs. |

It has nothing to do with taxes. Large quantities of currency moving around in briefcases is the main way money laundering happens, and the law is designed to track large currency transfers and thus discourage laundering. |

it has something to do with the anti-money laundering law. if you are bringing more than 10k, you have to declare it. |

anything over 10 K has to be registered with the feds, social security number, etc. You can bring 9K though! |
