Does anyone know anything about commodities?

Stupendous
Since this is in the investing thread, I assume you want to know about commodities as related to stocks.

Commodities are mainly natural resources, especially metals such as gold, silver, aluminum, etc. Oil is the most watched commodity, but there are also less watched commodities such as canola oil or coffee beans that are traded.

If you want to play them, as an individual investor, you can't just buy a barrel of oil or a bar of silver.

However, you can buy Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in funds tied to the resource, or buy large companies that specialize in that commodity (ie. Alcoa for Aluminum, Barricks for Gold, Petro Canada for Oil).

The word commodity is a term with distinct meanings in business and in Marxian political economy. For the former, it is a largely homogeneous product, whereas for the latter, it refers generically to wares offered for exchange.

Linguistically, the word commodity came into use in English in the 15th century, being derived from the French word "commodité" meaning "benefit, profit", similar in meaning to biens (goods). The Latin root meaning is commoditas, referring variously to the appropriate measure of something; a fitting state, time or condition; a good quality; efficaciousness or propriety; and advantage, or benefit. The German equivalent is die Ware, i.e. wares or goods offered for sale.

In the world of business, a commodity is an undifferentiated product whose value arises from the owner's right to sell rather than the right to use. Example: commodities from the financial world include oil (sold by the barrel), electricity, wheat, bulk chemicals such as sulfuric acid, base and other metals, and even pork-bellies and orange juice. More modern commodities include bandwidth, RAM chips and (experimentally) computer processor cycles, and negative commodity units like emissions credits.

In the original and simplified sense, commodities were things of value, of uniform quality, that were produced in large quantities by many different producers; the items from each different producer are considered equivalent. It is the contract and this underlying standard that define the commodity, not any quality inherent in the product. One can reasonably say that food commodities, for example, are defined by the fact that they substitute for each other in recipes, and that one can use the food without having to look at it too closely

Commodities exchanges include:

Chicago Board of Trade
Euronext.liffe
London Metal Exchange
New York Mercantile Exchange

Something useful that can be turned to commercial or other advantage: “Left-handed, power-hitting third basemen are a rare commodity in the big leagues” (Steve Guiremand).
An article of trade or commerce, especially an agricultural or mining product that can be processed and resold.
Advantage; benefit.

The answer Stupendous gave is more to the mark. I typically think of commodities as (important) raw resources. In addition to using ETF, commodities are traded using futures options. You buy or sell contracts that give you the right to buy or sell commodities at a certain price at a specified future date. Yahoo, in their finance section, has a good bit about options. Morningstar also has educational areas about options.

What does it mean?

1. A basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other commodities of the same type. Commodities are most often used as inputs in the production of other goods or services. The quality of a given commodity may differ slightly, but it is essentially uniform across producers. When they are traded on an exchange, commodities must also meet specified minimum standards, also known as a basis grade.

2. Any good exchanged during commerce, which includes goods traded on a commodity exchange.

Investopedia says:

1. The basic idea is that there is little differentiation between a commodity coming from one producer and the same commodity from another producer - a barrel of oil is basically the same product, regardless of the producer. Compare this to, say, electronics, where the quality and features of a given product will be completely different depending on the producer. Some traditional examples of commodities include grains, gold, beef, oil and natural gas. More recently, the definition has expanded to include financial products such as foreign currencies and indexes. Technological advances have also led to new types of commodities being exchanged in the marketplace: for example, cell phone minutes and bandwidth.

2. The sale and purchase of commodities is usually carried out through futures contracts on exchanges that standardize the quantity and minimum quality of the commodity being traded. For example, the Chicago Board of Trade stipulates that one wheat contract is for 5,000 bushels and also states what grades of wheat (e.g. No. 2 Northern Spring) can be used to satisfy the contract.

Commodities.. Interesting .... Best way to put it is the following:

Any Natural Raw Material which the majority of world governments declare as a necessity and allocate a monetary value for trade and commerce.
What we know of as commodities today might not necessarily be commodities tomorrow!!

For example:
Gold = 630$ per ounce today.

100 years from today US space station Apollo 13 on Mars mines new mineral great in beauty and use.

Gold = 100$ per ounce
New Mineral = 1000$ per ounce.

Same goes for oil....... tic toc tic toc

There are 52 officially recognized commodities in the ATS TrekMush economy, these commodities can be bought and sold at markets and produced by factories. Commodities are also measured in metric tons. or commods.

That they are basically an illussion! Life is a game and you need to educate yourself on the rules on whatever game your playing in life. Remember it is only a game. Reality is you will never really own any commodities, it is only a tool to buy or trade for what you want or need next. An ever flowing river of currency exchange.

gdepaula
It usually refers to products that are heavily traded and for which prices may vary sharply due to market conditions.
