Scorpio | Does buy and hold really work in investing in the stock market? |
Look at the Nikkei 225, Japan's version of our DOW. If you invested 24 years ago in the Nikkei, you'd have less now than you did then. That's 24 years ago!! When you see that, why can't that happen with the DOW or NASDAQ or S&P 500? What should a person do with their money they want to save and grow? |

the key to it all is KNOWING WHEN TO SELL.if you stick in and you see problems coming up you should try to move to sell at that point, then invest in another side of the market thast is going up....it is a daily chore to keep up and work your job |

I move mine around once in a while. I have a good financial adviser that I talk with once in a while. I got completely out of the stock market July 2007 and I'm sure glad I did. I moved 3/4 of what I have to guaranteed interest and the other 1/4 to a no lose stock fund and I'm sure glad I did. Maybe one day I'll move it again. It's your money manage it well. I may not not have made much in interest in the past year, but at least I didn't loose. |

The Japanese economy went through a long recession in the 1990s that lasted for about 10 years. As far as Buy, Sell, or Hold, those are the opinions of analysts working for investment houses. The best bet if you are young is to invest in bonds and securities. Slow growth nevertheless low risk. |

If you followed a dollar cost averaging philosophy you would have made a lot more money.
Here's a good article that explains it well. It helped me a lot:

I am older. I have saved $$ throughout my life. Here is what I and my wife did. I still can't see a problem with it. We bought a 30 year joint and survivor Plus Life annuity. It pays us 5.3445 percent income. Every time we get another 10,000, we buy another. Our goal is 500,000 in the next 4 years. True, we lose the use of the 500,000, but the 5.3445% comes in for 30 years or longer if we live. If we die, our kids get it until the 30 years is up. We have other money in bonds and mutual funds, but the annuity income is excellent. Might not be for everyone, but cash flow, in excess of what we need, plus we build our own inflation fund by buying more each year. BTW, this was our idea. not some salesmans. and, we got quotes from 15 different carriers.. Integrity LIfe beat them all, believe it or not...out of Cinci ohio. Beat Pru, Met, Nationwide, Genworth, Jackson National and the rest, whom I can't remember right now.
who knew that there could be so much difference in annuity payouts...sometimes the difference was as much as 1000 per year on 100,000. Do your homework. And, when the stock market crashes, I ain't worrying about it...I get my 5+%. |
