Does my WM stock become JPM stock now that the govt flipped my WM stock?
jpm earlier offered to buy out wm, and now the govt orchestrated a hostile takeover? is this legal? will I get anything?? can I sue the govt for stealing my money? will there be a class action lawsuit since this is illegal to just take somebody else's money if I were to do it? do law and order still apply anymore?

Actually, WM becomes a colorful piece of scratch paper for the kids to draw on.

If you do get any stock, it will be virtually nothing since WAMU is about $0.16 per share as I write this after a 90% decline overnight. WAMU was insolvent and the government took it over to protect depositors. Never say never regarding lawsuits, but I personally don't see any basis in this case. If someone should be sued, it is the people who ran to the bank and withdrew all of their money, they are the ones that caused WAMU to default.

Your WAMU stock is pretty much worthless. That's the risk you take as a stockholder. Everyone over the age of 16 knows that. Quit whining.

JPM is not acquiring WM. They are buying the deposits and some of the branches. This is legal because FDIC has power to step in and take over the part of the company that has insured deposits if it believes that those deposits might be at risk if such action is not taken. The shareholders that were still hanging on found out they hung on too long and now own a bank holding company with no bank, just a pool of delinquent mortgages with unknown (i any) value..

Unluckily, you get nothing. The earlier JPM buyout was declined by Washington Mutual. The government acted within the law by finding a bank to buy the deposit accounts from a failed bank. WaMu still exists in bankrupt form.

As for lawsuits, about the best you could do would be to sue whoever suggested the offer be turned down. However, you probably won't win because the offer was turned down partially based on the better offer they received from TPG. Also, the offer turned down was $8 a share, about 72 cents lower than the market price of the stock at the time. you will be hard pressed to win a suit based on not accepting a low-ball offer.

What makes you believe WM was worth anything?

Hey!! No one guarantees returns from investments. You invested in Washington Mutual which made many bad loans and suffered losses as a result. If J.P.Morgan acquired WM on a stock deal you may get JPM stock. If it was a cash buyout, the creditors come first and then the shareholders.
