D. J | Feel like a recession? |
I have been watching alot of cnbc and bloomberg and finance related shows. I keep hearing the experts say that "....2008 will feel like a recession but it wont be a recession...." what does that mean? Additional Details most of you are missing the point of the question. I am not asking if you think that we are in a recession. |

I think it's an analysts way of making a non-commital statement.
How about " It may feel like you've been hit over the head with a 2x4 but it won't be a 2x4." Does it matter what actually hit your head? |

it means there won't be 2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.
therefore it wont "officially" be a recession.
however to the average household there wil be a lot of layoffs, credit and income fears and thru most people's eyes will be indistinguisible to a real recession. |

I hear that some people are saying it's too early to tell one way or another. There are a lot of things to take into account.
I think the big test is going to come once the majority companies start releasing their 10-K's and we can see what the credit crisis is going to have on their balance sheets... that hasn't yet been revealed. |

The two recessions I have lived through went like this:
Companies barely hired, so if you lose your job it will be very hard to replace it. And employers cut staff yet the work stays the same.
Your costs increase but your pay either stays the same or shrinks.
That is probably what they are trying to say.
But, they are idiots. If the Federal government still used the same methods of figuring employment & inflation as they did in the 80s it would be evident we have been in a recession for a couple years. Back in the early 90s Congress, the President & the Federal Reserve conspired to keep us in the dark and feed us BS to keep us from "panicking".
If you apply ACTUAL inflation to our GDP, it is obvious we are shrinking NOT growing.
Now if you removed any gross sales from GDP that used to be attributed to American workers/production, but are now 100% derived from outside the country, again it would be obvious we are shrinking, not growing.
Finally, if they would take out the ridiculously overpaid executives from the major companies AND the health insurance from the average hourly wage statistic, it would be clear that us "average" Americans are making SMALLER wages, not larger as the Feds report.
We are in deep doodoo and as long as the Government lies to us, and we don't pay attention or stand up and say "hey, we aren't doing 'fine'" it will only get worse.
I think the Great Depression may end up looking like a time of prosperity for most of us. |

"Recession" is a self-defined term. Its just an expression. |

Orwellian double speak ... during the 90's were were told that that was not a depression... yet unemployment peaked at something like 24%... interesting that it was something near 25% at the peak of the great depression... wondering if we actually get the real facts... |
