even analysts have a difficult time covering more than 20 names. covering too many names risks that you might fall behind on one particular security, but then again, individual investors don't have to go through the trouble of writing analyst reports :)

I like to keep them between 5-10. That's a manageble number and when the indicators or fundamentals change, I'll try to move another one in and sell the bad one.

I like to keep the number Small, between 3 and 5, that way if one of my stocks increases a lot my total portfolio also increases a lot.
More stocks usually means less fluctuation in portfolio value and less chance of huge gains. Of course, also less chance of huge losses.
Anyway, for a small part of my capital, I am prepared to take on some risk with the opportunity for making much larger gains.
One strategy I particularly like is the stocksmonthly system.
