Staying Away from Banks
Get answers from millions of real people.?
lots of banks got greedy and invested in homeloans...can you provide info...on listing of banks which is on possible or have been taken over by the feds...FDIC. I want to protect my nest egg...surely this info is well guarded because the possible delinquent banks or solvent ones would be in a frenzy---customers jumping ship..

The FDIC reported that they have some 90 banks on their watch list. The FDIC does not release this list to the public (avoid panic selling in the stock and avoid a run on the bank).

Indymac was not on the FDIC's "watch list."

I'm not sure, but you might find some information here. The Office of Thrift Supervision.

Indeed greed did have a great deal to do with the current banking situation. It was not necessarily greed throughout the banking system but it certainly has infected the entire banking system. And it is possible that quite a few banks that had nothing to do with the mortgage swindle might fall victim to the consequences as the house of credit cards comes crashing down. The FDIC was established to insure your deposits up to $100,000. Whether they or the U S government will have sufficient funds to pay off all the depositors is open to speculation. They were stressed during the S&L bailout which has significant parallels to the current situation.

If you were to look at the currentl stock prices of U S banks and even many foreign banks you might suspect that a proliferation of potential failures is possible.

Of the 430 actively traded commercial banks, 48 are 50% off of their 200 day moving average. 140 are 20% off of their 200 day moving average. 245 are selling below book value--more than 1/2. Investors do not have a great deal of confidence currently of the future of the banking industry.

There are a very few that are trading above their 200 day moving average and above their book value. One is LBAI. There are a few others.

An avalanche cashing-out rush would push any bank to a liqudity crash that will be very costly to everyone, so we can't expect FDIC to post warning against any bank.

If you have insured account (not an investment one) that is less than $100K, by FDIC intent, you need not be worried.

They do not hide the fact they are taking over a bank. By the time you hear about it, it is a done deal and made public.

They also don't publish any info about banks they consider at risk for the same reason you state.

Other than that, the financials of banks are public record. You have to check them out yourself. You only need one right?

Hi

The credit crunch its around the corner the coming recession where we all jump around and leave our homes.

Where we all sell at the same time before the property market declines, the banks will make fortunes issuing remortgages and some will sell simply because they could not afford the purchase on there home (yes).

Be ad viced.

the fdic is never going to close down a bank. that's not what they do - they just insure customer deposits. nor will the government be nationalizing banks anytime soon.

also, greed had little to do with investing in mbs - they were legitimate investments that simply didn't fare as well as people had hoped.
