Good or bad time to buy BP shares? Your opinions please.?
What do you reckon? Seems to me that it could go either way, dependent on whether the US force BP to suspend dividends, but I am really not sure. Your input would be gratefully received.
Additional Details
Thank you all for your input, It is, as I suspected, a bit of a gamble as mark so rightly states, but I also think raysor is on the right track with long v short term investment. Not sure I want to tie up any substantial amount for the 3/4 years it will probably take to get a reasonable return. At least, not until there are signs of an economic upturn.
I really appreciate you all taking the time out to answer this. Good luck with your own investments.

Maybe it depends on whether the US want to get rid of BP. They obviously could if they wanted to and I wouldn't put it past them. Can BP go bust? Three months ago you would have thought it a mad question. As you would a similar question about Lehman Bros. etc. Against that BP's cash flow is about $40bn a quarter (can't remember where I saw that) and the quarterly dividend is $1.8bn.Fitch has estimated penalties could be between $2bn and $8bn but the adverse reaction in BP shares may put limitations on their access to capital markets. Furthermore if the dividend is suspended the Income funds will have to sell shares. There doesn't seem a logical answer but I think 1. It is not for short term speculators (even at 350p) and 2. It could be rewarding for the medium/long term (3+years).

Yes it could go either way, but if it goes the right way then it could be very profitable to buy shares now. All depends on how much risk you are willing to take.

BP shares are falling like crazy, but will go back up eventually, haven't said that you should always look at shares like it's a bet on the horses. Can you afford to lose it all? if the answers is NO then buy premium bonds or something else.
I would suggest you go to BP website and investors section, there is lots of info that you may find useful. Including on dividends, the scrip programme and basic info on the tax implication for these.

I think Peter Lynch once said that if it goes to zero (i.e. bankrupcy - it's possible with all the massive lawsuits) you lose all your investment money, regardless whether you bought at $100 or $0.01.
