Gordon Ghekko and the economic theory, he states that moeny itself isn't lost or made but transferred?
It seems true in investing and most everything money isn't made just redistributed MY QUESTION is what economic theory is this called?

Zero sum game. Game theory. Robert Aumann (Nobel Prize winner) described collusive games, with non-Nash equilibria...but, he's talking about war games not market forces. So long as the size of the pie stays the same OR the ratio of GDP growth to real wage growth equals 1 then you've got yourself a Zero sum game. IMO, the markets are the same beast except that cash inflows are seen as growth where as in accounting we have the DUAL ASSPECT THEORY, which by its nature is a zero sum concept. If we accounted for GDP like we account for corporate balance sheets we'd see the zero sum game. Just a thought.

I think he forgot to mention that it's also dissipated.

I presume you are asking a stock market question even though you don't say so, but let's consider the macro economy first.

No, it is not true, because the function of the Federal Reserve is to increase or decrease the total supply of money, to match increasing or decreasing populations and economic activity.

If we consider the above stock market example of Google stock, then that IS a zero sum transfer, IF we consider only realized gains and losses. The answerer's example of large unrealized gains is accurate, but it's not real money until the investor sells. The act of selling makes it a zero sum transfer.

But Google does NOT pay a dividend.

There are examples of stock market investments that are not zero sum transfers. Consider a longer term investment in Bank of America or Altria, followed by selling all shares.

Here you have the zero sum transfer of money between different investors, in addition to a very considerable amount of dividend payouts flowing from the corporate coffers into the hands of the long term investor.

In this case the high cash flow, high dividend corporation is literally the money tree, with the dividend investor happily strolling through the orchard plucking money as he goes.

I don't really believe this is part of an economic theory Steve J. But it probably should be. This is actually an Oliver Stone quote...it was used in the movie.

trio_jeepy
It's not true.

Consider this example. If there are 10,000 owners of Google stock, and the trading price goes from $700 to $710, without a trade taking place, who has lost money? Other than the odd short here or there, essentially everybody has made money. This is the case in the stock market, which is not a zero-sum market.

However, in the futures and options markets, which are two-sided, any gain in price is a loss for the writer of the futures or options contract. This is a zero-sum market. Hence, in these markets, wealth is transferred back and forth.

Frank Castle
That line was for dramatic purposes only and the film "Wall Street" was made for entertainment purposes only and it's not a BIOGRAPHIC FILM.

Each day somebody digs a little gold from the ground and more wealth is created.

This is is true for any natural resource like wood, oil, corn and even pigs.

Do you realize of course the Euro or the United States of America Dollar are just worthless pieces of paper, right?

In the end, we need real things exchanged for more real things.

The paper bills and metal coins are just here to keep us from walking around with a dead pig on our backs. (THE BARTER SYSTEM)

We don't use the barter system anymore.
