Singerofsongs | Great books for beginner investors? |
I'm over 40 and have just gotten rid of all my debt except for my house. I'm finally in a position to start saving for my retirement (better late than never). I have money to turbo charge my retirement savings and am able to invest quite a bit of my check. Any suggestions for good books that will help me gather understanding in the investment field. This is not only scary for me but I am very green and don't want to make many mistakes.. |

Investing Demystified- nice reference book, covering bonds, stocks, etc.
From there, it depends on what you are interested in. Real-estate investing? Stock Market investing? Fixed income?
If you are interested in selecting your own stocks, I would recommend, in order:
1. The Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graham
2. Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits - Phillip Fischer
3. Dhando Investor - Mohnish Pabrai
4. Buffettology - Mary Buffett
5. Security Analysis - Benjamin Graham
The market is rife with misinformation, the-next-hot-thing, and general shenanigans. Keeping a dose of common sense and discipline is your most valuable ally. |

you may want to look at the "Wiley Investment Classics" series of books, many of which were written decades ago by some of the greatest investors of all time. they cover investing in very broad terms and examine the whys and wherefores of up and down markets throughout history. you may do better with your own investments after you take in the historical long-term view. and then you can go on to the personal finance and investment writers who concentrate on today's issues and be able to think critically about their "expertise".
i think the important question to ask is not WHAT to invest in, but WHY are you investing? |

I remember when that was me. I tried finding a book or two to help, but the truth is that the terminology and variants can be daunting.
Get a grasp for the terms first. Understand that the smartest of people struggle with grasping all the nuance and even then often fail to achieve their goals.
If you have a 401K plan at work....max it out and spread your investment over several categories. Right now, I would get exposure in Big Cap stocks, Global stocks, cash. I would be careful about too much exposure in Small Caps or Value stocks.
The market is in for a rough ride in the short term. Having cash right now for the next few months is not all bad. |

My parents are accountants, but I wanted to learn how to do it myself, so I headed to the library. These books gave me a really solid, basic understanding of what I needed to know, and what I didn't know I didn't know. I feel a lot more confident now.
Some good, easy reads:
-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money
-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Investing
-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Mutual Funds
-“Smart Women Finish Rich” or “The Automatic Millionaire”, by David Bach
-any Suze Orman books |

I suggest reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and "Cashflow Quadrant" first. Then you will see what direction your reading should take you if you want to begin investing. These are the two books that I started off with and it helps me tremendously in my investment process from then on.
Meanwhile there are some sites you can look at to understand the investment world better. |
