Flattruth | Gulf crude oil opportunity? |
If I were to buy a boat and scoop up some of that unrefined oil in the gulf and sell to the oil companies, how much could I get per barrel? |

Karen

$0 -- your start-up costs to buy a boat, etc. would outweigh your profits. |

Once the oil is exposed to the air and sun, the parts of the oil you want evaporate out, and the UV partially breaks down what's left. This is why it turns red once it's been floating for a couple of days in the tropical sun.
At the wellhead, it starts out as "sweet light crude". One barrel (42 gallons) of this delivered to any major Texas pipeline is worth $74.50. But once you evaporate out the lighter components that you would make gasoline out of, what's left is "bitumen" that's worth far less. I don't have bitumen prices on my faves list, but a quick google implies a price just under $1000 per ton. |
