guitarman | Have we finally hit a bottom in the stock market. Are only brighter days ahead now? |
The volatility of the market has dropped off significantly. The past few weeks have been pretty calm. We have not seen big losses. Even on bad economic news report days, the markets just shrug it off and go into positive territory. The investment firms are turning into bulls once again. |

I think probably not. I think the market is acting irrationally again, at the moment. The market is shrugging of some horrible news that I think should worry them more.
I think it is a bear trap rally.
I also think we could have a big tumble from here but likely short lived.
In the bigger picture the market is rather low. It could also stay down for a long time. I see nothing to drive the economy and thus stocks up in the near future, meaning in a year's time. But the market should turn up first.

This is December which usually means the DOW looks good. Brighter days are ahead but we have NOT hit bottom yet.
Let's go to history for a lesson; we say we value history but we rarely learn from it. The stock market crashed in 1929 which is not news to anyone. But it didn't bottom until 1932 and man did it tank.
We can brag about all of our technological advances but the same fundamental reasons are all in place for our market to repeat that era. |

Signs do point to us having hit bottom, but no one can know for sure. I believe we are going to see a sideways market for quite a while (maybe 6-9 mos.) before a slow turn around. |

We are in a consolidation phase. It seems to me the likely breakout will be to the upside, but it can really go either way.. Whether we have set any multi-year lows remains to be seen, but if this is the bottom we need to have a panic rally, followed by a panic selloff before we can call this a solid base. |

They are non-volatile in your opinion because they aren't making the enormous jumps and dives they've been making in the past. But a 100 point swing is considered volatile historically. I think a better indicator is volume. And volume is still low (meaning many people aren't trading). We need more trading as a sign of buyer confidence.
From what I hear and read we'll probably have another year or so of this crap - we're near the bottom, if not at it already. But it isn't going to improve anytime soon (meaning at least a year). Lots of people are holding on to their money and I can't say I blame them. But once interest and mortgage rates drop people will start borrowing again (responsibly?) and some of this mess will blow over. |

This is the worst economic mess since the Great Depression in scope and depth. The news continues to get worse. I have no idea why the market is up a 1000 points since it's low. Irrational exuberance? Defies logic.
All signs point to a sideways market for a few months, with a good chance for another plunge. In other words, no way to know.
I do know that timing the market is an exercise in futility. Doesn't keep most of us from trying.
Only way to win for sure is to invest in a mixed bag of high quality companies and hold for a long time. Winning any other way is pure luck. Might as well drop your money on red at the roulette wheel. |
