Hi, I want to open up a savings and checking account; which bank should I choose: Bank of America or Wachovia?

Which ever bank is the most convenient to you. Basically there is little difference between major banks.

Bank of America is trying hard, but received a lot of flack over issuing credit cards to illegal immigrants in Calif. & Texas! Wachovia has a fine reputation for customer service.

I tried Bank of America. To get something that they promised I would receive within 50 days, it took five months, countless phone calls, visits to two branches, and a complaint to the BBB. Also, they twice charged a fee that they had said that they would not charge. I finally closed the account because it was taking too much time to try to remedy everything that went wrong and I felt that I could no longer trust them.

B OF A has a free on line account.

I would choose Bank of America. They are one of the biggest banks in the US and are constantly striving to stay competitive with their products and services.

Are those your only two choices? If so, I'd say there's probably not much difference between the two, so as someone else said, I'd pick the one that's more convenient.

Do you have any credit unions that you are eligible to join (through your company or an organization you belong to or maybe by being a relative of a credit union member)? If so, you're likely to find that the fees are much lower and interest rates higher there than at any bank. For savings/checking accounts, I think credit unions are definitely the best way to go. They provide similar service but because they are non-profit, they don't cost as much.

Personally I would choose Bank of America

They have more locations through out (for travel conveinience) and the post deposits before debits - also they have their check card available with your photo to prevent identify theft.

They have also been around longer than Wachovia and offer more loan products as well

I have used Wachovia for years and have received very good service from numerous branch offices in several states. I suspect that complaints about them are isolated and related to specific branches. Any bank is likely to have a few bad branches.

My deals with Bank of America is very limited, but I had no complaints.

I suggest you visit your local branch of each one and see which impresses you. But why limit yourself to those two. If checking and savings are your only criteria, I would suggest you check out some local banks as well.
