Stocks are a risk, they are like putting money in a slot machine, there is NO garauntee you will get your money back. CDs are a 100% garauntee because you are loaning the bank your money, and they pay you intereset on it.
You do not pay taxes on gains from stocks until the year that you sell them. Even if you own them for 20 years, you don't pay tax until they are sold. And you don't pay taxes when you buy them. The year that you sell them you pay, what is called, a capital gains tax. If you sell them for less than you originally bought them for you don't pay taxes per se, but you get a deduction for the loss.
Certificates of Deposits(CDs) you either pay the tax when the CD matures. Or it is possible that you just pay what ever interst is earned, each year that you earn some interest. Most likely you will pay taxes on all of the interest that was earned for that CD, at the end of its term.
So, cd's safe
stocks - Not safe
But if you want to buy stocks I recommend a mutual fund, you can even set it up where you pay your gains taxes each year. Like a AAA Mutual fund, here is one I like: www.Americanfunds.com look at the growth funds.
Also, any bank usually sells CD's try a couple of banks, to see who offers the best rates. Like a newer bank in town, is best because they are looking for ways to draw people into thier business, or go with the bank you already have an account with, for convenience.
Good Luck |

First you have to define what kind of risk.
Modern Portfolio Theory developed by Economics Nobel Prize winner Harry M. Markowitz.
There is short term loss of capital risk
And also long term loss of purchasing power risk.
Stock investing is a very risky sort term investment but a very good long term strategy for protecting purchasing power against inflation.
CDs are very good at protecting short term loss of capital but terrible at protecting long term erosion of purchasing power.
Also as a note keep in mind that I am referring to a well diversified stock portfolio not just one individual stock.
Taxes are dependent on how often you receive actual dividends & capital gains with stocks.
Cd's you will be taxed on the interest received. |

Safety is found in a CD (less than $100,000) backed by the FDIC. Taxes are irrelevant. |

Stock is safer than CD---the 4% is really not income.. A stock purchase can net 2-300% in todays market. You choose on what you want to pay tax on... |

of course a CD is safer than Stocks
Both take in taxes, since both give you an income and you invested in them to take a tax break. |

CD is much safer. What is best on taxes will depend on how you would trade and invest in the stocks. The taxes for the CD will be a constant, because it will be based on the interest earned. However, taxes for stocks will be based on if they are sold for a profit or a loss. If you lose money in stocks there will be no taxes. If you make more profit in stocks there will be more taxes. |
