Honestly, Are all these Northern Rock people mad?
I can't stop watching the news where they are all queuing up. They just don't get it do they?
Additional Details
To Allen555, No I wouldn't. I read and listen which is the whole point of me asking this question in the first place.

snetterton
They're not mad - they just don't understand. If they only listened to the news or read a (decent) newspaper i.e. NOT the Daily Mail, they would know their money is safe. Their behaviour will just cause more problems - for everyone.

Northern Spriggan
The consumer panic actually will kill off the Northern Rock.

Thanks simpletons, i was planning on getting a mortgage from them.

i think its great Northern Rock were solvent went public with there problem which they state would onlyhave been for one month and their loyal customers are causing a run on the bank.
" im scared in case they go broke"
they wont go broke if they leave their money in the bank bloody morons
i think Northern rock shouldnt open the doors for a week would be a laugh might cause a robbery might cause a wave of common sense

cheek_of_it_all
Yup, mad as hatters.

It just shows how much attention that they pay to the news.

They hears that NR was in trouble and were out the door before the additional information about the assistance they have been given by the BoE.

If anything this panic withdrawal of cash may cause the NR group to fold. It is a throw back to the Lloyd's collapse where the Lloyd's group folded from bad investment.

El Cid
Actually NR is not as dependent on savers as others. Wait till it's a bank or building soc. that is more dependent on savers. If we act like this and start stuffing or savings under the mattress the whole banking system will collapse and burglars will have a field day.
But the BoE should have acted more responsibly. If I went to my bank manager to arrange a overdraft, I do not expect him to tell my neighbours, least of all the media, with words like 'we only will lend if we think that there is a threat to stability', as if things were already sliding under and they had to act to stop it. It's like saying that fire extinguishers will be provided because we think the place is about to burn down! What do you expect people to do when they then see the extinguishers being brought out! Stay calm, please.

I guess they'll be keeping piles of used bank notes under their beds from now on!

I'll bet there are quite a few instances in the history of the world where the government and banks were saying 'don't worry your money is fine' right before a financial or even governmental collapse in which people lost everything.

I'd be a bit worried if I had money in Northern Rock no matter what anyone said.

If you move out of the financial arena wasn't everyone saying Rover were going to be fine just before it all went boink? Dodgy recollection so sorry if it wasn't quite like that. - The point is the governments job is to say its all going to be ok, don't panic. Thats when I start panicking, well not always.

Personally I hope it all goes ok and it seems fine but you never know - when the sub-prime thing went down the information is that it would affect everything in ways no-one could know. This is definitely linked to that but no-one can say it will be totally hunky-dory.

Good luck to them.

enigma_variation
im going down to northern rock asap, there is going to be a lot of old biddies carrying 50 quid notes in their handbags

bring it on!

claimbankchargesback
They aren't mad, I can sort of understand where they are coming from as they most likely worked hard for their savings and obviously don't want to lose them!

So mad no, misinformed yes!

The fact is their money is perfectly safe. For a start Northern Rock haven't needed to touch the loan from the Bank of England. Its there in case they need it, but they don't currently, but its sensible to have it available.

The Bank of England would not have lent the money to Northern Rock if they didn't think Northern Rock could survive and they would get it back.

Although Northern Rock are short of actual cash for future lending, they are asset rich. All their mortgages are secured on properties, and is guarenteed income, so they are nowhere near bankrupt!

On top of all this the money is protected by guarantees from the government. Savings up to around £32,000 the government will pay 90% back in the event that Northern Rock went under and couldn't pay people their money. However, very fee people seem to know this, and rather than news reports telling them, the reporters are hyping the situation up causing massive panic in the interest of a good story.

I think if people knew all the facts there would be very few worrying and withdrawing their money.

As it was £1 billion was withdrawn yesterday by panicked customers, and its this more than anything else that could cause the downfall of Northern Rock!

Hibee
Perhaps James Stewart and his guardian angel will come along.

They certainly do seem a little silly, they cause more panic by panicking, The Bank of England is backing Northern Rock, the recent events are just a hiccup !

I agree with Snetterton - but it was obvious what was going to happen as soon as the news broke.

allen555
Just scared. If all your savings were in that bank, you'd be scared.
