Ken
How about instead of invading Iraq we invest one percent of that money into Olympic Sports?
The returns in terms of a better image, economy and world peace will be much better.

My brother is in the Army and even I know the war was one of the biggest mistakes ever. And you want to vote for Mccain? You are a mindless sheep. Bah, bah...

I think all war start with religion and people who fight for their religion should be sent to mars with one way ticket.

How about we invest that one percent into something worth while like the state of orphanages and schools here in the US.

Elwood Blues
I'll go along with that as long as we also invest 10% in better schools!

What would you have in mind for the money to be used for?
The Olympic Team gets more than enough money through sponsorship, I really can't think of anything they could do with extra cash.

Did you miss 9/11? If the US hadn't gone into Iraq, there would have been more of that. Saddam was funding the terrorists. Now he is not. Olympics doesn't mean world peace. The Olympics has become a distraction for other wars. I don't think that the people of Iraq would agree with you.

It's not a bad idea, except it makes it look like you value medals over lives.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I am a Democrat. And I think you will find that it's "baa".

muncie birder
That would only be a consideration if Halliburton could make some money off the deal.

Ken, Ken, Ken. Your questions are so silly it makes them so much fun to answer. First of all, the two aren't mutually exclusive. I'm sure we could finance a war in Iraq just fine with 99% of the budget spent there (we could do so with much less than that.)

Also, as many of the people here pointed out - Olympic sports aren't the top priority of our nation's government. Iraq is one of them. But there are many more that make the list ahead of Olympic Sports. I believe it's listed at #2,386 on the list of problems our government needs to deal with.

The return of a better image - how is this true? How will investing money in Olympic sports make the world suddenly like us more. It won't. Stopping our ridiculous ideological imperialism (and I believe you referred to our loss of Olympic clout in your other question as "the death of an empire" - I believe empires began to go out of style around the turn of the 20th century) is probably a start. Ravaging countries with troops and bombs doesn't exactly make them say "gee, what great guys." So, that being said Olympic spending and stopping the war in Iraq aren't necessarily mutually inclusive either. Thus, they have absolutely nothing in common with each other.

The return of a better economy - Stopping the war would benefit our economy. Spending more money on the Olympics would hurt our economy. Sense it has previously been noted that neither of these are related in any way shape or form, our economy is probably going to be headed in the same direction as it has been for the past 7-8 years. (This is not a statement about presidents or leadership. I am simply noting that since the .com bubble burst our economy has steadily been trending downward).

The return of "better" world peace - I'm not sure if there are degrees of world peace. It's either there (which it isn't) or it isn't. World peace is not something you can have better or worse of; it just is. That being said, the various countries Olympic committees (which are essentially in charge of everything concerning a country's Olympic team, including financing, team advertisements, etc.) aren't out there declaring war on people. They sit in desks in offices and make phone calls and and talk to sponsors and arrange hotels and go to preliminarys and go to the Games, etc. etc. So increasing Olympic spending (and I assume our caliber of athletes, as you mentioned from your other post) will benefit world peace, how?

As I said earlier, you are a mindless sheep. (I don't know if anyone can be stupid enough to make this s**t up on their own so I feel like you've got to be hearing it from someone.) You should stop going to Big 10 sporting events and start going to college. It will be money better spent. Not that you need a college education to answer these questions yourself, common sense is the only requirement. As someone else asked on another post, "do you think before you post these questions"?
