NITIN D | How are points calculated on stock exchanges? |
when they say sensex is 100 points up or 50 points down , how do they arrive at these figures |

Exchange averages (like the Dow or the NASDAQ) are averages based on a "representative basket" of stocks called "components." The movement on the averages are calculated based upon a formula which is plugged into the movement of the various components.
What gets really tricky is that periodically, the components of the "representative basket" of stocks changes, either because a company is removed or added (for example, in 2004 the Dow removed AT&T, Kodak, and International Paper and replaced them with AGI, Verison, and Pfizer) to the basket or because one of the existing components spins of part of its business, and the formula is then adjusted to reflect the difference. |

Let me explain you with an example of the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The BSE index comprises of 30 companies which are traded on the exchange. Each company has been assigned a weight on the index for e.g. ACC (0.56%), Reliance Industries (15.45%)Wipro (3.32%) etc. etc. etc. The sum of weights of all the the 30 companies is equal to 100%.
Depending on the share price movement of these companies, the sensex changes.... so a 5% change in ACC will not impact the overall index as its composition is 0.56% to the total sensex, however a 5% change in the share price of Reliance Industries will affect the sensex quite substantially as it has a higher weight of 15.45%.
To better understand the working of the movement in sensex, please check the link that I provide below... it has details of the weights allocated to each shares forming part of sensex. |

You have questioned that how is the sensex calculated.
Its and fact that the bse has an list of 30companies non as scripts. It was few years back that it was to an limitition. But now there are hundreds of companies.
It would be an ever lasting that the sensex will be getting the ups and downs only with any effect in the A graded 30companies.Its not compulsory that the entire companies get in green mark when the sensex climbs up and vice-versa.It effects only to those companies who are actually or indirectly based on the other companies in the F&O segments. |

Hmm.... it is not easy to explain in this forum. But let me try.
BSE index is constructed by taking few stocks as base. While calculating it takes into account the free float of the stocks and multiply by the current market price. The combined of these calcs are taken and the index is arrived at.
The stock exchange calculates this index online and every 15 seconds during the market hours. The index is displayed instantly on all the trading terminals.
Please refer to the the Bombay Stock exchange website www.bseindia.com for more information.
Please refer to The Economic Times for names of all the stocks that comprise the index. |

Sensex is based on 30 stocks from various sectors in the BSE.
Weights are assigned to each of the constituent stocks of the Sensex based on their market capitalization. These weights are then summed up to get the value of Sensex. |
