How can a stock be selling at a few Dollars one day and jump up to several hundreds the next day?
OMR in June 2000

In the case of OMR I believe what you are seeing is a problem with the data on yahoo. The 1000 x jump on June 26, 2000 followed by a subsequent 1000 x fall on September 26 never actually happened. When you look up the data from other sources like bigcharts or marketwatch no such jump in the data exists.

That being said, Odyssey Marine is the kind of business that could rise or fall many times in a single session due to the mercurial nature of its very risky business. OMR is in the business of finding treasure on old shipwrecks, usually these efforts are privately financed given the fact that it costs a lot of money to find, protect, salvage, and then hire lawyers to try to keep the loot of a significant shipwreck. Rarely if ever is there any return, but when a find is actually made a few million dollars can return hundreds of millions.

Nowadays such a company would probably not be brought to market, but the exuberance of the 90's and the dot com explosion, anything and everything, the riskier the better, was the flavor of the day. Why OMR was never taken back private is anyones guess.

You probably are looking at it because it recently has jumped because of having announced another significant find.

those were the dot com days where ignorance was king and intellegence was out the window. even cabbi drivers were recommending yahoo then, lol. great source of credibility from a cabbi. lol.

Sounds like something was announced by the company that made it a good buy, or perhaps a competitor failed - could be lots of things.

The reasons can be legion. People selling off to take profits, good/bad news, supply and demand changes, profit and loss statements. Buying and selling stocks is like a gigantic poker game in which the players ( brokers) are playing with other peoples money, hoping to make good commissions
( betting) by playing smart. Sometimes they win, sometime not.
This is a rich man's game!
People have made fortunes starting with just a few dollars.

Also keep in mind if a company does a reverse split of their outstanding shares this can cause a dramatic increase in price. For example if you have 100 shares of stock work $5 and the company reverse splits their shares 10-1 now you have 10 shares worth $50. I don't think that was the case here, but its an example of how a big change can happen.

It can be such things as the day it goes public and the morket. Google had this happen, and many firms have it happen that they expect one price at initial offer, and it goes much higher very rapidly

Something happens that makes it worth investing in. Simple as that.

If a gold exploration company has been taking losses for 10 years straight, their stock would be very low, possibly even in the dollar range.

Now, imagine they announce they have hit, and verified, the largest deposit of gold ever found, and it is encased in diamonds, and floating in oil...

that stock would climb, would it not?

The term penny stocks generally refers to any stock with a share price of between .01 and $5.00. These stocks are also called pink sheet stocks, as they are usually set apart from normal stocks with pink highlighting.

Penny stock investors usually invest several dollars in companies that have shares worth 1-5 cents in hopes that they will take off and grow to the size of $2-3 per share in a matter of months. This definitely does happen occasionally, but it isn't always easy to predict.

When Google went public, for instance, you could purchase shares of their initial public offering (IPO) for several cents. Since the Google IPO, the share price has soared to over $470

The simple answer is that lots of investors suddenly decide they want the stock. The surge in demand will cause a rise in price, since the number of shares hasn't increased, but the number of people bidding against each other to purchase the shares is now much higher.

What caused everyone to suddenly want to buy? It could be almost anything related to a dramatic improvement in the company's prospects. An example would be a start-up bio-tech company with no marketable products that has just discovered a cure for cancer.

Sounds like a reverse stock split like 1 for 3 and then coupled with a buying frenzy.

Wealthy people manipulate the stock market as they manipulate other things like the price of gas. Shame on them.
