There are real fake diamonds. The Russians have perfected the production of large clean real diamonds. They are perfect. That is a clue. A natural diamond has inclusions(small fractures) and carbon specks (tiny black dots) The best way is to verify the origin of the diamond. For investing. the De Beers family controls most of the diamonds in the world. So if it came from there it's a good bet it's real. Use your head if it seems too good to be true it probably is. |

Take it to a jeweler....they'll know. |

Take it to a jeweler. A good jeweler will have a little electronic device that will tell you immediately. |

The only 100% way to be sure is to have a certified jeweler test it.
I can usually tell the diff between a diamond and a cubic zirconia, but I've had extensive training in gemology---but even a good moissanite can fool me sometimes! |

by the amount of money spent on the trinket.its so sad people get a rating or satisfaction out of someone else spending big bucks on a trinket of commitment.spend your money on something to improve your life, besides your wife! |

try biting it. if you chip your tooth, it may be real. if it tastes like delicious candy, it's probably fake. |

A real diamond will cut glass, a fake won't. |

Well, Well, Well You can tell if it breaks or not. if you hit it with a hammer and it breaks, you better break the person who sold you the diamond at the neck. If it doesn't break, then you have found a good diamond and try to steal all of their other diamonds. |

try cutting a hole in a window...didn't you see James Bond...you know 007...
hey just saw the other serious answers....if you take it to a jewler, be careful, make sure they stay in the same room. A few dishonest ones exchange them for fake ones in the back...so don't take any chances...at least if its over a carat...otherwise there is no risk....generally these days diamonds are also marked. You can find out where they come from! |

I am sure no one will really try to cut glass with jewelry, but I have to clear up a misconception. A diamond will cut glass, and some other substances cut glass also. Just because it cuts glass does not prove it is a real diamond.
Let's be honest, some people who call themselves jewelers are not very knowledgeable (think clerks in a shopping mall jewelry store). Good fakes can fool many jewelers.
Diamonds with a bluish tint are rare and valuable. Sapphires come in all colors, including blue. Very pale blue sapphires can sometimes be passed off as blue diamonds. While sapphires are not cheap, they are less expensive than diamonds.
I've been rambling long enough. How can the average person tell? You probably can't. Take it to a knowledgeable and trustworthy jeweler. |

A real diamond can cut. Or just take it to a jeweler. |

The way it sparkles.a real diamond will give u red, blue ,different colors when put in light u can turn ur ring around and u can see the colors a fake ring won't do that..and u can take it to a jeweler. |

Since fake diamonds are being made so well these days even adding inclusions so as to make them really look real, the only way to really be certain a diamond is real is to have it removed from setting and weighed. The weight factor is the only thing that the fake diamonds don't get right. I am not sure, but I think that the diamonds weigh more than the fakes per physical carat. This is what a jeweler told me a few years ago. |

There are many differences
A fake normally does not have inclusions
Its Girdle may be abraded or polished look for glass like fractures
Dispersion of light will be greater in a fake
Natural color is is also a sign. But let me warn you if you wish to purchase a diamond you should seek out a known gemologist cause the price of the gem may be large if the stone in question is large and you do not want to make a mistake |

It's very hard to tell. CZs are made so well nowadays they even fool jewelers before they use the light refractor. |

if you rub your tooth against a flat surface it should feel coarse, if it feels smooth it is cubic zerc, also if you get it wet and look at it under a microscope tiny little beads of water should stick to it. |

sometimes you can tell by looking. But most jewelry stores can tell you and shouldn't charge you for looking. |

If your Boyfriend gives you the ring and takes you to a nice place to eat it's fake :) If he gives you a ring and you go to Mcdonalds it's real :) |
