Do-Ba You-Ba Think-Ba That-Ba? | How come when the US Stock Market goes down, all the other ones in the world do, too? |
Why does the American Stock Market seem to affect all the other countries? Does it have anything to do with them being the most powerful country and having the largest economy in the world? |

Our markets also go down when theirs do. It wasn't always this way, but as we move to a more global economy the national markets become more and more interrelated. In the academic world they use a "correlation coefficient" to measure how much different markets move in tandem. Google it if you're interested. |

The US Stock Market is connected to all of the other Financial Markets in what is now The Global Market! |

There is an interconnectedness with other economies. All the economies effect each other.
Let's say microsoft goes down in price. It may go down due to lack of demand. Perhaps Intuit an american software company that it competes with also go down. All of a sudden all the software companies go down. If Microsoft goes down, then they buy less things from China. Some of these stocks are linked via pairs trading, quasi-arbitrage, correlations, computer systems. But people are all watching the same news these days. And news is contagious. Be careful about what you put on your facebook... it will affect us all. |

Our market is nosediving due to the recession. We are the biggest customer of foreign countries so our recession means we buy less from foreign businesses which causes their stock market to go down when ours drops. |

Yes.
Markets are forward looking, and changes in the US stock exchange not only represents trillions of dollar of wealth bgeing created or destroyed in the most influential economy in the world, but also the direction of the economy in the future.
For an idea of the scale of the US' influence:
The US GDP at market exchange rates is approximately valued at $13.84 trillion (2007)
The next largest economy,
The Japanese GDP at market exchange ratse is approvately valued at $4.384 trillion (2007)
The major European economies are individually almost as significant as the Japanese economy, but not quite. The US is so large and rich that it would take the entire European Union's economies combined to surpass its influence.

The Japanese Nikkei and US Exchanges both affect other markets, depending on when financial news breaks. To a lesser extent, the US will follow the European markets depending on the news. It is actually very hard to correlate a one-to-one relationship between movements across markets. |
