How do buy and trade stock? I don't even know where to start or how to use the programs such as scottrade.com.
I'm looking for cheap stock just to get the gist of buying and trading .

scottrade is a great place to start. you can't beat $7 trades. check out their website to learn how to get started. you'll need to print and mail in an account application along with a check to get your account established. I think there is no minimum $ amount to get started.

to learn wich stock to buy, I recomend you sign up for this daily buy/sell list from Jim Cramer's Mad Money TV show...

I recommend you watch Cramer's show on CNBC and read his latest book too.

p.s. i second the recomendation below for The Motely Fool website - www.fool.com

I recommend two things. Read one book (to start with), "Liar's Poker" by Michael Lewis. And visit a website and get information. www.murreymath.com . There are many programs available out there other than scottrade also. Take your time and study and practice with the fake money programs out there before spending your real money. And have respect for the market. Good luck!

Low price does NOT equal cheap. I suggest VFINX (Vanguard S&P 500 Index) until you read a bit more. May I suggest reading the Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham?

As far as the actual trading transactions themselves, opening a trading account with Scottrade is easy. Scottrade only requires a $500 minimum to open a new account, and you can apply online. It is only $7.00/trade for stocks priced over $1 per share, regardless of your trade frequency or the number of shares in a transaction. However, you don't want to jump blindly into investing. Some important things to consider are the reason you're investing (for short term enjoyment or long range goals such as college, a new home, or retirement), the risk associated with the various investments, and then choosing the investment, or mix of investments, that are right for you.

You can compare the commissions/fees of several brokerage firms at: http://www.scottrade.com/online_broker_comparison/discount_brokerage_comparison.asp .

I hope you find this information useful. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I'd be happy to help.

The best place to start is in your education. Try these websites:
http://www.fool.com
http://beginnersinvest.about.com/
http://www.investopedia.com
http://www.thestreet.com/ (see The Street.com University)

A good way to learn about anything is by doing. However, I would suggest that you learn through a virtual stock market game. Practice with fake money before you start with your real money (even if you plan to buy cheap stocks).

I have listed a couple of links below that will take you to a selection of stock market simulations. If you don't like any of these, you could also practice by writing down your stock selections and tracking them online or through reading the paper.
