Very, very few (bright, intelligent) fund managers beat the market index (because "the market" represents the common intelligence that supersedes any one individual.

You'll be best off investing in a total market index fund (Vanguard's symbol is "vtsmx") and will beat 90% of the fund managers out there.

Then - if you have the inclination and as you have learn more, add intervals of 10% of your money and begin to invest in individual stocks. Don't increase that percent, until you are successful.

money can be made with right kind of attitude and heavily over-trading with low rate of turnover or by investing in news/rumour based companies. You can also try out some sms based or broker tips for making speculative day trading gains

The best way for beginners. Is to buy stocks into companies. That you would like to own. Because, that is what your doing. Find undervalued name brand stocks.

Just look around, at the things you use everyday. To see what company makes the product. Like, the Oreo's your eating now. Or, the plastic cup your drinking out of. You get the point.

Then go to finance.google.com
Type in the name of the company. To see, if they have stock listed. Or, if the company is a private held company. If the company is listed. You can do your homework. To find out, if the company is undervalued or not.
